Preliminary data from the Pa. Department of Labor and Industry, shows that unemployment in Wayne County rose 8/10 of a percentage point from November to December 2009. The leap, however, was not quite as high as a year before.
In human numbers, approximately 2,000 people who could have been working in Wayne County, Pa., were without a job in December. The preliminary jobless rate was 8.1 percent. The good news was that 23,200 people were working.
The rate in November 2009 was 7.4 percent, with 1,900 people out of work and 23,400 employed. One year ago, in December 2008, the rate stood at 7.0 percent. At that time, unemployment took a bigger leap, 2.1 percentage points, from 5.9 percent in November 2008.
Wayne County continues to be an oasis among its neighbors in the Keystone State, with a lower jobless rate. Wayne also beat out Pennsylvania’s rate and the national figure. Preliminary data for this past December showed the following unemployment percentage statistics: Pike County, 9.8; Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 9.7; Susquehanna County, 8.8; East Stroudsburg market area, 9.7; Pennsylvania, 8.9 and United States, 10.0.
The figures do not reflect the quality of jobs including wages. They also only count those people receiving Unemployment Compensation, and not people who are out of work and not eligible for this benefit.
In rounded numbers, there were 100 less retail trade jobs in December compared to a year before. On the other hand, there was an increase of 100 education and health service jobs.
