A coalition of local government agencies and non-profits are continuing their push to employ individuals with disabilities in the region.
Representatives of the 17 agencies that makeup the Wayne County Employment Coalition held a meeting at the public library in Honesdale on Thursday to discuss community and business outreach initiatives, and also the best avenues to find work for a population that may be overlooked yet readily willing to be employed today.
Wendy Simons, of the Wayne County human services department, said one of their top priorities is getting the word out to employers, and to those who may not only be looking for work but also need assistance doing so.
“The more ... that can join us, the better,” said Simons, “to come and learn about the program.”
Agencies within the coalition offer several services such as job training and job placement.
They also help with preparing for employment, such as polishing up a resume, and proper interviewing techniques.
“We are a resource for employees,” said Peggy Wilson, a supervisor with the Wayne County human services department.
The coalition generally meets once every two months at venues throughout the county. The next meeting is set for Thursday, January 21, 9 a.m., at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce in Honesdale.
County school districts, including Western Wayne, Wayne Highlands, and Wallenpaupack Area, are also on board as there are students who need similar assistance with finding employment either while attending high school or after graduation.
Those who are interested are welcome to attend the upcoming meeting.
“We want to share what we have with the community,” said Simons.
Coalition agencies include: Wayne County Job Training, Goodwill, NHS of NEPA, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Human Resources Center, Wallenpaupack Area School District, Wayne Highlands School District, Western Wayne School District, Career Link, Workforce Wayne, WEDCO, KAG Associates, Wayne County Office of Mental Health / Mental Retardation / Early Intervention, SCORE, ODP – Northeast Region, PASSABCO, and Wayne County Human Services.
