The newly formed Greater Honesdale Partnership’s Shop Local committee invites all GHP member businesses to create a “Shop Local” sign and WIN!
To enter the contest, GHP members are invited to create and display a sign inviting shoppers to “Shop Local”. The cost to enter the contest is $5.00 per sign, and the entry fee must be dropped off or mailed to committee chair, Ray Harrington at R3 Home Improvement, 222 Willow Ave., Honesdale. Entry fees, along with a photo of your “Shop Local” sign must reach Ray by April 15, 2010. The signs must remain up and will be judged for creativity during the 50th Annual Sidewalk Sales in July. The creator of the best sign will win the “pot”.
“Shopping locally is important to our economy,” said GHP Executive Director Gail Tucker. “If 50% of the working population in America spent just $25.00 a month at local, independently owned businesses, more than $21 billion dollars would be generated.”
“It’s amazing to learn that 68 perecent of every $100.00 spent in our independently owned stores stays in our community,” says Ray Harrington. “There are so many advantages to supporting our locally owned retail, service, and professional businesses.”
The committee, made up of GHP member businesspeople and their employees, was formed in January and has met twice to date. Along with the “Shop Local” sign contest, the group will be offering “Shop Local” buttons for just twenty-five cents apiece for employers and their employees to wear or give to their clientele. Each business purchasing buttons will also receive a “Shop Local” door sign. The group is also working on other ideas to get the word out that shopping local really pays.
