As a means to direct one-way motorists to the business district, Greater Honesdale Partnership (GHP) is planning decorative directional signs.
Paul Ludick, GHP board member, presented the plan to Honesdale Council Monday night. Edward Langendoerfer advised GHP to show the proposal to the Borough Planning Commission and to contact Code Enforcement Officer Wayne Earley for the permits.
He said that the signs are important because travelers heading west on Route 6, up Church Street, miss Main Street- and most of the businesses- entirely.
Four signs will be erected to point to the Main Street business district. All going on private property, permission has been obtained to put one up at 5th and Church Streets, and at 11th and Church Streets; a third is expected to be put up between these intersections.
Dr. Louis Zefran also has given approval to put one on his dental practice property on Route 6 across from the Route 6 Plaza.
Two “welcome” signs are also to be put up, one hopefully at Riverside Park across from Hotel Wayne, on Park Street, said Ludick, and the other on the grass island on Willow Avenue, across from the Alert fire company.
Designed to be attractive, the backs of the signs acknowledge Honesdale as the “Birthplace of the American Railroad,” with a picture of the Stourbridge Lion.
The directional signs state, “Shops, Restaurants, Boutiques Old Town Main Street Honesdale”. The “welcome” signs say, “Honesdale: A Great Place to Visit, A Better Place to Live. Welcome!” Both also state on top, “Settled 1825”.
Ludick said that the signs are costing approximately $5,000, including the poles. GHP will be sending letters to merchants, and anyone may contribute, he added. The GHP may be contacted at (570)253-5492.
