Stepping quickly down South Street will be a horse and carriage arriving at the Waymart D&H Depot on Saturday, July 26th at 11 a.m. Alighting will be the three speakers for the unveiling of Car 43-Summer Passenger Car.
Commander Ken Swan of American Legion Post 889 will lead in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Rod Brown, Master of Ceremonies and Project Director for Car 43 will introduce Robert Stahr, Jr. who will tell the story of Car43.
Car 43 was sold by the D&H in 1900 and taken to Takach Greenfield Acres in Carbondale. John Booth, of the Booth Farm on Route 247, moved the car from the D&H Tracks to Takach's on a wagon pulled by eight horses. The trucks and platforms were removed at the time for scrap. The new owners closed the sides with wood and used it for a chicken coop. In the 1970's it was made into a children's playhouse. The inside was painted pink with curtains on the windows.
Stahr bought it from Andy Takach on February 15, 1987 for $25.00. He then placed it on hay wagon running gear and moved it to the Stevens Brothers Farm at Watt's Hill in Honesdale. The farm was sold in 1992 so Car 43 was then moved to Spencer Callender's Farm at Wrighter Lake. In 1994 Bob move it to his barn in South Canaan and on April 7th, 1998 Bob donated Car 43 to the Waymart Area Historical Society. Rod Brown taking on the challenge to restore/replicate it.
The second speaker will be John DeAngelis, Department Chairman fo Drafting and Design at Johnson College. John sat down with Rod and figured the exact dimensions and measurements of the Car using a CAD program and his students.
The final speaker will be Jim Kundratic. Jim, at his shops in Baltimore MD, JKCabinetry, replicated each piece and put the car together. This intricate and arduous task took hundreds of hours and extensive D&H research.
Rod Brown will sum up the long journey of Car 43.
After the program Ice Cream will be hand-made for all attending and there will be an extensive display of old-time tools courtesy of Jim Kundratic.
The Open House at the Depot and Train Car Shed, 118 South Street in Waymart, will begin at 11 a.m. and close at 3:30 p.m. with the drawing for the Toro Riding Mower and 21 other prizes.
