Sal Mecca and Victor Capooci from the Dunmore Historical Society will give a PowerPoint presentation on the Pennsylvania Gravity Railroad at the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary on Friday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m.
The Pennsylvania Gravity Railroad is very much tied to the history of Hawley, having been a major employer here between 1850 and 1885.
The talk will be held in the Blough Building on the Sanctuary grounds. A lunch will follow. There is no charge for the lecture, but there is a fee for the lunch (members of the Sanctuary and Historical Society $10; non-members $12). Reservations are necessary. Please call (570)253-1185 or e-mail suydam@ptd.net. Space is  limited.
The talk is co-sponsored by the Wallenpaupack Historical Society and the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary. The Society’s Tom Kennedy and Sanctuary’s Hank Loftus heard the presentation in February and thought it would be great idea to ask Mecca to do it in the summer. Kennedy said, “Sal brings the Pennsylvania Coal Company’s Gravity Railroad to life with many wonderful anecdotes.”
Sal Mecca’s first-hand knowledge of the Pennsylvania Coal Company’s Gravity Railroad route is extensive. His comparison of original railroad maps to current aerial photographs and maps along with his many hikes along its length has given him an extensive understanding of the railroad’s planes and operation. He has, in his own words, walked the Gravity railroad line through Dunmore “hundreds of times.”
As President of the Dunmore Historical Society, Sal and the Society’s Sergeant-at-Arms Victor Capooci have given this talk to many groups in northeastern Pennsylvania. “I think people will find this very interesting, I learned a great deal after listening to Sal and Victor when they did this presentation back in February,” said Hank Loftus.
The Pennsylvania Coal Company built a 47-mile long gravity rail  system to transport anthracite coal from its mines near Port Griffith (Pittston) to Paupack Eddy (Hawley). There, the coal was transferred  to canal boats on the Delaware and Hudson Canal that then took it to the Hudson River where it eventually reached the New York and New England markets.
The Wallenpaupack Historical Society works to preserve and promote the history of the Wallenpaupack lake region. The Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary is a 600-acre property with hiking and nature trails. It is home to the Dorflinger Glass Museum and the Wildflower Music Festival. For additional information about either organization, their websites are: www.wallenpaupackhistorical.org and www.dorflinger.org.
The Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary is located on Long Ridge Road and Elizabeth Street in White Mills. At the blinking light adjacent to the Pennsylvania Historic Marker in White Mills, turn and go up the steep hill (Elizabeth Street) for 6/10 of a mile to the stop sign at a second blinking light. Continue on for 1/10 of a mile to the entrance of the Sanctuary on your right.
