The Wayne Pike County Animal Response Team was developed last year for the reason that our pets are especially vulnerable when a disaster strikes because they must depend on us for help. Many pet lives were claimed and more separated from their owners during recent weather emergencies throughout the country.
Many of these pets could have been saved by a coordinated response plan. The Wayne Pike County Animal Response Team (CART) will insure that this will never happen in our area in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, said Dan Potter, Disaster Services Manager, Wayne Pike Chapter Red Cross.
“Our mission is to operate a temporary pet-friendly shelter, located in close proximity to a shelter prepared for families who need to evacuate their homes,” Potter stated. “Our job will be to provide a safe environment for pets until such time as they can be united with families and returned to their homes.”
Although the team is ready to serve, Potter said that they still have a little way to go. They need people with all types of skills, expertise and resources to participate and help the team grow. Free training opportunities are available so when a disaster strikes, you are trained and ready to go. Volunteers are also needed in every aspect of this project, from leadership positions to staffing, rescue teams, outreach and education, fundraising, etc.
If you would like to become an animal response team volunteer, need more information, or donate to the foundation (Wayne Pike Animal Response Team; c/o American Red Cross, 1111 Main St, Honesdale, PA 18431) please contact Red Cross Disaster Services Manager Dan Potter at 253-2310. Their next meeting will be conducted on March 8 at 6 p.m. at the Dimmick Building in Honesdale. “Call the above number for more information, come join us and bring a friend.” said Potter.
