This colorless lead crystal bowl is cut with many motifs used during the height of the American Brillant cut glass period which ran from 1880-1910. The pattern is Essex and was cut using stone wheels at the C. Dorflinger & Sons glass factory in White Mills, PA. Motifs that were used include hobstars, fans, miter cuts and strawberry diamonds.

Dorflinger Glass Museum reopens this Saturday, May 1.
For its 2010 season, the Dorflinger Glass Museum features a display of glass called “A Passion for Dorflinger Glass: The Collection of a Lifetime” which is a 125+ piece collection of two sisters who spent several decades collecting glass made by the Dorflinger companies.
It features fine examples of glass covering the entire range of Dorflinger’s glass production. Two ongoing exhibits—one with glass on loan from Dorflinger family members and another that shows variations of a rose design have expanded to feature new items. A display of recent acquisitions will include a collection of Wayne County made glass from Virginia Frisbie Saunders. The museum’s gift shop added several lines of new merchandise to continue as one of the area’s largest sources of glass related gift items and jewelry.
The museum’s open hours remain the same—Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
Open dates and hours have also been set for the restored 1867 Glassworker’s House that is operated by the museum. It is about one-half mile away from the museum, on Charles Street, in the village of White Mills. The open dates for this historic house are May 29, 30; June 19, July 3, 4, 24; October 9, 16 from 1 to 4 pm. Admission to the house is separate from that of the glass museum. On November 27 and 28 the house will be open free from noon to 3 pm. Special tours for groups of fifteen or more are available.
2010 Special Exhibits:
• “A Passion for Dorflinger Glass: The Collection of a Lifetime”
This exhibit highlights over 125 pieces of glass collected by two sisters who spent several decades collecting glass made by the Dorflinger companies. It features fine examples of glass covering the entire range of Dorflinger’s glass production.
“Dorflinger Legacy II: More Glass from Family Collections” - ongoing
This exhibit is a rotating display of glass on loan from members of the Dorflinger family. In addition to several rare historic pieces and some common patterns, the collections have several fine examples with copper wheel engraved designs.
• “Rose Pattern in Glass” - ongoing
Wayne County glass experts Walter Barbe and Kurt Reed continue to explore variations of the rose pattern from the many Wayne county glass factories with a display of over 30 pieces of glass with the rose pattern that were found in researching their book “The Glass Industry in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, 1807-Present.”
Proceeds from the museum’s gift shop are used to support the operation of the museum. The shop features a wide variety of glass gift items, including an eclectic collection of glass jewelry, paperweights, hand-blown Blenko Glass, reproductions from Pairpoint, Boyd’s Crystal Art Glass and Mosser, ornaments from the United States, Canada, and Egypt, and more.
The Dorflinger Glass Museum is located in the former home of renowned glassmaker Christian Dorflinger in White Mills, PA. Set in the middle of the 600-acre Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary, the museum exhibits the largest collection of Dorflinger glass in the United States. Additional exhibits show glass made by other Wayne County glass factories. The Sanctuary is also home to the Wildflower Music Festival, a series of eight Saturday evening and one Sunday afternoon concerts held in a natural amphitheater.
At the blinking light adjacent to the White Mills Hotel on Route 6, White Mills, turn and go up the steep hill (Elizabeth Street) for 6/10 of a mile to the stop sign at a second blinking light. Continue on for 1/10 of a mile to the entrance of the Sanctuary on your right.
