CLINTON TWP. -

This is the first natural gas rig that has been set up in Wayne County in the current wave of interest by gas drilling companies seeking leases from private land owners. It is on the land of Louis Matoushek, just east of Creamton in Clinton Township. Matoushek, who is a former township supervisor, said that Stone Energy Corporation requested that no sightseers come on the property. This photo was taken from a public road Wednesday, May 7, 2008, the day drilling was expected to begin. Water for the fracking process will be trucked in, said Matoushek, and stored in a lagoon. He remarked of the large number of trucks that had been coming in and out to set up the rig in the last few weeks. The rig, he estimated, was 120 feet high (in comparison, the Presbyterian Church steeple in Honesdale stands at 160 feet). At last count, approximately 800 Wayne County land owners had signed leases with gas companies.
