It seems the Honesdale zoning office was the target of yet another questionable illegal entry Monday.

It appears there may have been yet another incident involving the planning and zoning office in Honesdale.

And whether or not this is a related matter, the borough council has called for a special meeting on Thursday evening to discuss personnel.

The alleged incident apparently took place sometime over the past weekend.

According to F. J. Monaghan, council president, he was told by zoning officer Wayne Earley that a front door on the building was ajar. Earley apparently found the door ajar on Monday morning when arriving at the office.

One of the intriguing aspects is this particular door is that it is rarely, if ever, used. Monaghan said the door is part of the front facade of the building and is “not used that much.” It apparently appears to be part of the large window section at the zoning office.

All of this comes on the heels of a previous break-in reported at the zoning office in which it was claimed by Earley and then-council president Michael O’Day that some records, cash and a laptop computer were stolen. The first of those two alleged break-ins were not even reported to police but the second one was, which was more than a year ago. Since that time, the investigation has apparently ground to a halt with no further information being released by police.

In this latest incident, Monaghan said Earley apparently went straight to Honesdale Police Chief Joseph LoBasso and reported the door was ajar. He said the chief immediately called in the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct the investigation.

“That’s really all I know,” said Monaghan.

PSP Cpl. Mark Rogan from Dunmore Headquarters said he “can’t comment on an ongoing investigation.” All he did say was that a door was “found open” at borough hall.

Late Tuesday afternoon, we did receive a brief report from the Honesdale Criminal Investigation Unit at the State Police Barracks in Honesdale.

The report did say that the police are investigating an “alleged criminal trespass” at borough hall. It was reported that “an unknown actor(s) entered into the Honesdale Borough building, once inside the actor(s) entered the office of Wayne Earley, code enforcement officer. The actor(s) left an exit door ajar” and exited the building onto Main Street.

If further states that “no signs of forced entry were found and nothing is reported missing at this time.”
Honesdale Mayor Ed Langendoerfer said he didn’t have a lot of details about what had happened but did say he thinks borough officials need to “err on the side of protection of taxpayers.”

In the early afternoon, Monaghan made a phone call to the newspaper asking if we could find space to get in a special meeting advertisement so the council could get together on Thursday. There has to be 24 hours notice for a special meeting to be called. (That ad appears on page 5 of today’s newspaper.)

No details about the nature of the meeting have been given by Honesdale Borough officials.
Anyone with information should contact the State Police at 570-253-7126.
