Discover the environmental work going on in our region at the annual Pike-Wayne Earth Day Festival set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at PPL’s Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center.
Celebrate Earth Day by learning about local wildlife, composting, renewable energy, resource conservation, local history, native plants, birds and much more. Don’t miss this chance to embark on a geocaching adventure or test drive a kayak on Lake Wallenpaupack, weather permitting.
The day will be filled with fun, educational activities and demonstrations for the whole family. Some of the many activities include making bird feeders or watershed sundaes, butterfly puppet shows, bird and native plant walks, as well as a small local farmers market. Enjoy some wholesome goodies, which will be offered for sale by the Himalayan Institute’s Main Street Yoga Café.
The event, which is free and great for all ages, will be held rain or shine. Most exhibits and activities are indoors. Volunteers are needed. For questions, contact PPL at (570)251-6196 or pplpreserves@pplweb.com. For more information, visit www.pikewayneearthday.org.
Event participants include the Delaware Highlands Conservancy, Eagle Institute, Himalayan Institute, Lacawac Sanctuary, Lackawaxen River Conservancy, Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District, Mariposa Gardens, National Canoe Safety Patrol, National Park Service Upper Delaware, local herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore, Northeast PA Audubon Society, Northeast Wilderness Experience, Pocono Environmental Education Center, Pike County Conservation District, PPL, Promised Land State Park, SEEDS, Trout Unlimited, Wallenpaupack Historical Society, Wayne County Master Gardeners and WJFF Radio.
The Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center is part of PPL’s Wallenpaupack hydroelectric project, built in 1926 near Hawley, Pa. The learning center is off Route 6 just east of the intersection of Routes 590 and 6 and next to Wallenpaupack Area High School.
