Soon, Wayne County residents can become certified, registered nurses right in their own backyard.
In a partnership with Wayne Memorial Hospital, Luzerne County Community College will offer classes and clinical training in Honesdale for a two-year associates degree in nursing and registered nurse certification, said Dana Clark, the college’s vice president of academic affairs.
“Wayne Memorial came to us because they were looking ahead to the number of nurses they would need in the future,” said Clark in a phone interview with The Wayne Independent on Friday. “They identified a need.”
The college has an established nursing program at its Luzerne County campus, but this is a new endeavor in Wayne County, she said. Now, students can start and finish the program here.
Beginning this summer, residents can take general education and prerequisite classes required for the nursing degree at Honesdale High School.
Next year, students will attend classes -  including labs and clinical training - at Wayne Memorial Hospital’s facilities.
“We’re hoping to accept 36 students” for the first class, said Clark.
Wayne Memorial Spokesperson Lisa Champeau said the partnership will greatly assist the hospital in finding qualified nurses, as they are trying to fill open positions.
“All of this is ... because of the nursing shortage” we face, said Champeau.
Wayne Memorial Hospital is also offering financial incentives to those who enroll in the college’s nursing program, including tuition reimbursement in return for working at the hospital, she noted.
Registered nurses are expected to fill an estimated 587,000 new jobs in the years leading up to 2016, one of the largest numbers among all occupations, according to the federal Department of Labor.
They earned $57,280 in 2006, based on median annual income.
Sign-on bonuses are common in U.S. hospitals.
For enrollment information, contact the college’s admission department at 1-800-377-5222.
The public is invited to an informational session about the nursing program this Monday, May 11 at 7 p.m., at the Honesdale High School auditorium.
Also contact Wayne Memorial Hospital’s human resources department for information about tuition reimbursement, and other questions, at 251-6539 or 253-8989.
