The Weekly Almanac, a newspaper serving Wayne County, announced today that it has published its final edition.
The announcement was made in a letter sent to its subscribers and posted on its Website, Princeton, by New Jersey-based Publisher James Kilgore.
"It is with a great deal of regret that we have to inform you that you have received your last issue of the Weekly Almanac," Kilgore opened his letter. The complete text of the letter can be found at http://www.weeklyalmanac.com/articles/2009/01/09/news/doc496782faa7a28356677880.txt
Kilgore cited advertising and subscriber support that has "remained inadequate to operate a profitable newspaper." Kilgore indicated the paper had been operating at a loss.
"On behalf of The Wayne Independent staff, I want to express our sadness at seeing the Almanac close," said Wayne Independent Publisher Steve Fountain. "My prayers are with the Almanac's staff."
Almanac employees learned of the closing today.
In an e-mail sent out to clients and local media, the Almanac's Advertising Manager Stephanie Conklin wrote:
"I am sad to report that the staff here just learned that yesterday's issue of The Weekly Almanac is the last. Any advertising plans we had for the future will not come to fruition. It was such a pleasure to work all of you local business people in my hometown."
