“It was love at first sight.”

That’s how Monique Greenwood describes her first look at the former Bethany Mansion, a property she recently purchased with plans to turn it into a wellness spa resort — The Mansion at Noble Lane — by Spring 2012.

Greenwood closed on the property July 13th.

“There were lots of people who said, ‘There have been many businesses here that have failed,’ and didn’t believe and maybe still don’t believe that something can succeed here. But, I don’t believe that for one minute,” Greenwood said.

“Where people see broken windows and chipped paint and holes in the ceiling, I see fabulous chandeliers and working fireplaces and stunning furniture. I’m not intimidated by it, I’m ready for the challenge,” she said.

Dating back to 1903 — the estate of Mrs. Hortense Miller — the property has stood vacant for at least a decade.

“I love the physical buildings themselves. And I absolutely love the concept I have for the buildings. But, I’m really in love with the opportunity to have a different lifestyle. Having been in New York City the last 30 years of my life, coming to a place like this, being one with nature, meeting incredible people, the sense of community that exists here, just the serenity, I’m so ready for that,” she said.

Greenwood and her husband, Glenn Pogue, have already moved into the property’s carriage house with plans to start renovations on the rest of the buildings this week.

“That process should take about 10 months. And we hope to be ready for a grand opening early Spring, April/May,” she said.

“I’ve committed to the project, but I’ve also committed to the town. I’m using all local trades people,” she said.

The resort will feature 14 guest rooms, all with private baths.

Describing the layout of the main house, Greenwood said the first level will include: a formal foyer with a receptionist, living room, formal dining room, a private dining room that can be used for rehearsal dinners, two tea rooms, a 30-person meeting room, a gift shop, a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes, a commercial kitchen for making meals, and an indoor juice bar with an outdoor patio.

The second floor will feature six guest rooms, all with private baths, and an 8-room spa, including a couple’s spa room, a facial room, manicure/pedicure room, a wet treatment room for scrubs, wraps or waxing, etc., and three more massage rooms, along with a relaxation lounge with a balcony that overlooks the English garden.

The top or third floor will feature eight guest rooms, along with a great room complete with card tables, pool table, flat screen TVs, sofas and a huge, outdoor patio overlooking the grounds.

The property also boasts a 10,000 square foot recreation building, which houses an Olympic-sized in-ground, heating swimming pool, a basketball court, a state of the art gym with strength training and cardio equipment, a sauna and men’s and women’s locker rooms.
Along with guests, the public will be able to utilize the recreation building after purchasing a gym membership.

Greenwood says they plan to “bring back the beautiful English gardens and do yoga on the lawn and tai chi.”

The new owner says she also plans to offer “Tea and Tours” for people wishing to stop by and learn more about “this historic treasure.”

Greenwood plans to hire eight people: a head housekeeper, maintenance person, chef, spa director, sales manager, reservationist/receptionist, gym or fitness director, and an inn keeper.
