Pedestrian Safety
Pedestrian Safety Awareness Day: On August 14th, 2009 “Pedestrians Safety Awareness Day” was held in Hawley from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Knowing facts that 15 percent of all traffic accidents and a tragic 58 percent of all crashes in Pennsylvania happen on municipal owned roads and streets. It is very important that we conduct these programs to prevent it from happening in our borough. Mike Cotter from PENNA. Department of Transportation District 4 and his staff, the mayor, members of the Hawley Police Department conducted this program on Main Avenue from the Hawley Diner across Main Avenue to Tort Know. A thousand “Safety Pamphlets” were given out to motorists & pedestrians.
This year I also gave out bumper stickers from Triple A “School’s Open Drive Carefully” I was shocked to see all the motorists without seat belts. I’m sorry to say 95 percent were residence of Hawley and surrounding area. Some didn’t even have their children belted. It is so very important to keep our residence and the visitors to our community safe. That is why these programs are so very important. In the very near future a “Seat Belt Program” will be conducted by the State Police and Members of the Hawley Borough Police Department. Other “Safety Programs” are also being planned. Our “Pedestrian Safety Awareness Day” by PennDOT officials was classified as a “great success”. Mike Cotter, the planner for this program from PennDOT has always done an outstanding job putting this program together with me. He recently retired. I appreciate all he did and wish him a very happy retirement. I will miss working with him.
School is Open: I want to remind all our residence now that school has started, I want everyone to be safe and aware of students, school buses and their fellow motorists.
Watch your speed
Speed Reminder Machine: The “Speed Reminder Machine” arrived here on September 2nd and will be here for a week. One was placed by the Borough Building near the bridge. The second one was placed on route #6 near The Pines. These signs can only be placed on state highway rods and can only be moved by PennDOT staff. Next month, a different “Speed Reminder Machine” will be here--This machine gives a data collection. The Police will then be able to do a speed study in the area they have been placed.
West Nile Study: A west Nile study was done in Hawley Borough in June/July and August. Different areas were tested each time. All testing areas reported negative.
National Night Out: Once again this year out “National night Out” was very successful. I would like to thank the Hawley Borough Police for the great job they did. Thanks to “The Cooks” Lea Peoples and Marie Ribeiro- I always have so much fun cooking with them. It was a “hot” night. Thanks to the Crime Watch group for the nice job they did. Special thanks to the Shook Family at I.G.A. for all the food they donated to help feed all our guests of the evening. Thanks to Eastern Propane for the use of the grill and a very special thanks to all area residence that took time form their busy schedules to attend. It was truly a great “Night Out” here in Hawley.
Listening Town Hall Meeting: On August 17th, 2009 I represented the Borough at Congressman Christopher Carney “Listening Tour Town Hall Meeting” held at the Wayne County Courthouse, Honesdale, at 11 a.m. I felt that it was a very productive meeting. Health reform was well discussed. I’m sure he will study the comments that he received.
Letter of Sympathy: A letter of sympathy was sent from the Mayors office to the family of the late Ted Kennedy.
Forms: I would like to suggest to the personal committee that the Hawley Borough has a form in place when one of our staff gets injured in any manner. Recently, I have taken care of two Borough employees. As a result of that I have donated two first aid kits for our Borough trucks and have had the police kits updated. Mike O’Day, former State Trooper, first started me with the Police first aid kits, borough office, and my office. He is now working on this updating it all. We meet most of the OSHA requirements.
Street Signs: Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has in place all the 25 MPH signs on Route #6 from Borough line to Borough line and on 590 Borough line to Borough line.
