NEWFOUNDLAND - The 101st Greene-Dreher-Sterling (GDS) Fair starts its second century with free gate admission this Friday, August 24. Lin Klingerman, President of the GDS Fair, said this is a way for the fair board to show appreciation and give something back to the community for the past 100 years.

Along with a host of returning favorites, the small country fair in downtown Newfoundland is introducing some new acts, as well as a change to the week-day daily schedule.

Circus Una

Among their new attractions is Circus Una, an all woman stunt show in the area, utilizing a high wire and motorcycles.

They state on their website, “Circus Una’s unique combination of classic circus skills, stunt-show thrills, and impromptu silliness adds up to super fun, interactive fair and festival show.” Aerial, hula hoop and contortion acts and lots of clowning around lead up to the motorcycle high-wire thrills show finale.

Uma Mimnaugn, the show’s founder, began her career with the Big Apple Circus in New York City, and trained in aerial arts. She revamped the act with all women and more acrobatics.

There is no extra charge.

On Friday the 24th there will be a “Meet & Greet” for Circus Una at 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., under the Entertainment Tent.

Circus Una will then perform in the Main Arena on Saturday,  August 25, at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m.; Sunday, August 26, at 1, 3 and 5 p.m.; and again on Monday, August 27 at 3 and 6 p.m.

New schedule

Although the printed brochure says that admission on opening day is $8.00, Klingerman announced that it is free this year. The 101st fair opens at 3 p.m. on Friday August 24. She said this is a good opportunity to come and see what the fair has to offer and to plan your week. While admission is free, to go on the rides you will need to pay a $5.00 ticket for unlimited rides.

Saturday and Sunday, the fair opens at 11 a.m. as it did before.

On Monday trough Thursday, August 27-30, the fairgrounds open at 3 p.m.

Klingerman said that the board decided to try this change in hours of operation to see how it works. Attendance on week days historically has been light, and is hard for the GDS Fair Association to meet there budget as well as for the vendors to plan on how much food to prepare.

Friday, August 31, Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2, they open at 11 a.m.

As in the last couple years, the fair does not continue on Labor Day. She noted that this has worked out well in giving time for vendors to leave and the fairgrounds to be cleaned before Tuesday after Labor Day, when Wallenpaupack schools resume class (the South Elementary School, of course, is right in front of the fairgrounds).

Triple action Friday the 31st

Another new event is a combination show Friday, August 31 at 6 p.m. in the Main Arena. Monster Trucks, Motorcross and ATV drag racing will perform. This event replaces the American Racing Mower Association event which is listed for that time in the brochure.

Demolition Derby, always a big attraction, is the only Main Arena event this year carrying an extra charge: $5.00. This year they are pre-selling Derby tickets starting opening day. Demolition Derby takes place Saturday, September 1 at 7 p.m.

Another special attraction is Cowboy Mounted Shooting in the Main Arena, Wednesday at 6 p.m. More, anyone who may not like loud noises should be aware that guns will be fired at targets, just like in the Old West.

Daily highlights are summarized below. “Highlights” is a relative term, as what keeps people coming back to any fair is both a combination of things and something unique compared to someone else. Everyone has their favorites, whether it is the 4-H animals, the rides, fair food, musical entertainment, contests, truck or tractor shows, and so on. Some performers, etc., are scheduled more than once on a given day.

She said that the fair is result of months of work by their volunteers, who hold weekly work nights. They’ve added several new members this past year as well. She said they always welcome new members; the dues are $3 a year. They hold meetings every month on the fourth Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the South Elementary School Library; the public is invited.

Rain this summer was a nuisance in being able to keep up with the grounds, but the facilities have bene freshly painted. She said she has been praying the rain will stay away for the fair!

The GDS Fair is located behind the school, off Main Street (Route 191/507) in Newfoundland.
