HONESDALE, PA—That scams are proliferating comes as no surprise to anyone who has received a computerized voice message purportedly from the IRS.

In July, Growing Older Together (GOT) hosted “Scam Alert,” a presentation by Senior Supervisory Special Agent Janene Holter from the PA Attorney General’s office. Ms. Holter presented clear information on how to identify telephone scams, insurance scams, free-offer scams, as well as advice on negotiating with contractors and making wise charitable donations, among other topics.

Her overall message? Don’t be fooled.

Let your head rule, not your emotions. If an offer seems too good to be true, chances are it’s a scam.

The mission of GOT is to give adult residents, aged 60 and older, in Wayne County, PA and western Sullivan County, NY both the practical means and the connections to live independently in homes of their choice.
