TEXAS TWP—Local rent-to-own retailer Aaron's Sales and Lease is hosting a penny social and basket raffle December 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit the Dessin Animal Shelter.
Those interested are encouraged to stop by Aaron's new location – 1079 Texas-Palmyra Highway, Honesdale – for the afternoon excitement.
Attendees will be able to purchase ticket cards at the door to bid on a plethora of baskets assembled from donations made by local businesses and individuals.
Baskets include items like gift cards, clocks, T-shirts, birdhouses, blankets and a host of other prizes.
There will also be food and drinks available for purchase.
“Somebody can come with $10 and win a basket,” said Aaron's Regional Manager Keith Knapp. “They could probably eat a hot dot and have a soda, and win a basket for $10 or less.”
There are over 30 baskets awaiting winners this weekend. Drawings will take place within the last hour or so of the event.
The event will also feature a 50/50 raffle and a special appearance by hopeful Dessin adoptees, Hunter, an Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler & Beagle Mix, Chris Kringle, a male Domestic Short Hair cat, and Mellanie, a female Brown/Chocolate Tabby Domestic Short Hair cat.
This is the second such benefit Aaron's has done in support of Dessin.
The former took place in 2014 and raised just under $4,000.
Knapp explained the inaugural penny social was prompted in efforts to forestall Dessin's closure due to lack of funding.
Soliciting aid from business, basket donations for the event came at first in a trickle, then a flood as the last few days before the raffle approached, said Knapp.
“Honesdale is a community that, when there is a need ... they step up to the challenge and they're more than willing to show support for a good cause like the animal shelter.”
Knapp explained it was the store's intention to host another the year following, but were unable to due to the transition to Aaron's new location.
Now that they've resettled, the hope is to make it an annual event.
Aaron's General Manager Corey Kimble stated,“I think that Dessin fills a really important role in housing ... pets that wouldn't have any other type of shelter.”
Speaking to improvements the shelter has made with prior donations, Kimble continued, “You can see their money is being put to good use with the additions that they put on and the additional kennels that they have there.”
That being said, Kimble noted that new animals are frequently brought into the shelter, prompting the need for more funding to attend to them.
“They need more resources,” said Kimble.
In the few days leading up to the event, there is still time to get involved in the penny social.
Aaron's is looking for basket donations, gift cards or food to sell at the event, along with any marketing materials from the donors to display next to their contribution.
Those wishing to donate can deliver items to the store or call to have them picked up.
Interested businesses are encouraged to contact Corey Kimble at 570-253-5777 for more information or to arrange a pick-up.
