The Hornets punched their ticket to this year’s District Two Class AAA Duals tournament on Monday with a razor-thin win over archrival Wallenpaupack Area.
Led by senior Matt Evans, who notched the 100th win of his varsity wrestling career, Honesdale dealt the host Bucks a 29-24 Lackawanna League loss.
“I tried not to think about it too much,” Matt said of his quest for 100 wins. “It was definitely on my mind, though. What made it all the sweeter was getting it here against Paupack.”
Evans and his teammates will now enjoy a nice little hiatus. The Hornets are off until next weekend when the D-2 tourney begins at Pittston Area.
With the win over Paupack, Honesdale closes out the Lackawanna League’s regular season at 3-1. The Bucks fell to 1-4.
Milestone Moment
Paupack leapt out to an early lead in this one, but the Hornets roared back to take control with a sustained run throughout the lower and middle weights.
In fact, Honesdale reeled off seven consecutive wins at one point and stretched its advantage to 15 points at 26-12.
Ben Rutledge got things going with a tough 2-0 decision at 113. When Nick Duffy followed with a major at 120 and Evan Ken-nedy posted a tech fall at 126, the stage was set for a milestone moment.
Evans strode to the mat at 132 and endured two grueling periods against Paupack’s Chris Duff. Matt finally took control of the bout midway through the final period en route to a 9-3 decision...at which point a large contingent of Hornet fans gave Evans a standing ovation.
“I can’t even tell you how fast these four years have gone by,” Matt said. “It seems like just yesterday that I was wrestling here as a freshman. It’s crazy.”
Evans becomes just the 5th wrestler in HHS history to reach 100 wins. He joins Josh Arnone, Kevin Mulligan, Joe Arnone and Ryan Smith in this most exclusive of clubs.
“He’s the prototype of a Honesdale wrestler,” said Coach Chulada. “Matt is a blue collar guy: He shows up everyday and works his butt off to get better.”
Over & Out
The evening’s marquee match-up pitted Pat Ingulli of Paupack against Honesdale’s Aaron Kennedy.
Ingulli is a senior who’s also in search of his 100th career win. However, he was denied on this night thanks to an inspired effort.
Kennedy rallied from a late-bout deficit to earn a 10-8 decision. It was Aaron’s 22nd win of the season and the 82nd of his career.
