Western Wayne’s girls varsity basketball team had a rough go of it during the first half of this year’s Lackawanna League campaign.
The Lady ‘Cats managed just one win over the course of its rugged Division Two schedule. However, Coach Colleen Kloss is optimistic her squad will turn it around in the second half.
“We’re a young team and we’re gaining some valuable experience,” she told TWI Sports on the eve of Western Wayne’s Wednesday road trip to Riverside. “I think we’re going to surprise some people in the second half.”
The Lady ‘Cats are slated to return home Friday for a battle with Carbondale, the only team our local lasses defeated in the first half. Opening tip for that one is set for 7:30 p.m. at the venerable Varden Garden.
“The biggest thing I want to see in the second half is for us to play aggressive, man-to-man defense,” said Coach Kloss. “We need to pressure the ball and force some turnovers.”
On-Court Leaders
Abby Carmody closed out the first half as her team’s leading scorer.
A versatile senior guard who also stars in track and cross country, Carmody averaged just over 10 points per game in Lackawanna League action.
Abby also erupted for a team-best 14 in leading the Lady ‘Cats to a non-league 45-40 win over Lakeland on Monday night.
“Abby brings us tons of varsity experience,” Coach Kloss said. “When she’s on her game, Abby elevates all of her teammates. She’s a great role model for our younger player because she never stops hustling.”
Bridget Quinn is another veteran cager who is earning high marks.
A junior post player who’s seeing more and more time lately, Quinn powered her way to six points in the victory over Lakeland.
“I’m very impressed with Bridget,” said Coach Kloss. “She’s improved so much this year. Her defense is excellent and she’s become a presence on the boards.”
Rachel & Rebecca Carmody are also coming on strong for the Lady ‘Cats.
A talented forward who can play in the paint or step out and drill a trey, Rachel averaged 7.6 ppg in the first half.
“She’s getting more comfortable as the season goes along,” said Coach Kloss.
“Rachel is tough to match up against because she can play inside or outside.”
Rebecca is quickly becoming one of the region’s best young ballhandlers. A freshman point guard, Carmody is averaging 7.9 ppg in Division Two action.
