A big, raucous crowd turned out Wednesday to see the Hornets celebrate Senior Night in the best way possible...with a dominating win over Abington Heights.
The Red & Black fed off their fans’ emotions, racing out to a big early lead.
Rob Borkowski, Joe Quinn and Shamus Benson reeled off three consecutive pins to open the match, a run from which the visiting Comets never recovered.
The result was a 45-25 Lackawanna League victory for Honesdale.
“What great night!” exclaimed Hornets Coach Ryan Chulada. “It was so great to go out there and get a win for our seniors. “They’ve meant a lot to this program and it’s fantastic to go out on a high note like this.”
With the win, Honesdale improved its Division One record to 2-2. Next up for the local lads is a road trip to Rutgers University and a dual match against Christian Brothers Academy. This non-league battle is scheduled for noon on Sunday in New Jersey.
Honesdale returns to the Lackawanna League wars on Monday with a road trip to archrival Wallenpaupack Area.
Fast Start
Borkowski seemed to be evenly matched against Joe Murray at 182 and led just 2-0 after one period.
However, Rob exploded early in the second. He tossed Murray onto his back and sent the crowd into a frenzy with a lightning quick pin just 31 seconds into the frame.
“Rob did an awesome job out there tonight,” Coach Chulada said. “I expected him to win, but for him to go out there and pin...that was a pleasant surprise.”
Moments later, the fans were back on their feet as Joe Quinn posted a pin of his own at 195. The junior overcame a pair of illegal holds by his opponent, Jerry Langan, en route to a second period fall (3:40).
“Hey, Joe Quinn is really starting to make a name for himself around here,” said Coach Chulada. “He’s working hard in the room and the match results speak for themselves.”
Benson made it three in a row for Honesdale, clamping Abington’s Pat Kearney in a time of 2:51.
“I know I’ve said this before, but I’m so happy to have Shamus back in the fold,” said Coach Chulada. “He’s really solidified those upper weights for us.”
Trailing 18-0 in the blink of an eye, Abington tried to stage a rally, but couldn’t reverse the tide of Senior Night momentum.
Nick Duffy (120), Evan Kennedy (126), Matt Evans (132), Aaron Kennedy (138) and Chavez Lill (145) put the match away with five consecutive wins.
Duffy dominated his bout against Jackson Renninger, nearly pinning twice in the first period with a vicious headlock.
Zach Smith posted the Hornets’ final points of the night with a third period fall (5:36) at 160.
