Watch out for Delaware Valley in the second half of the Lackawanna League boys basketball season.
For a second time in less than a week, the Warriors invaded Wayne County and defeated a local team in dramatic fashion.
On Thursday night, DV battled back from an early deficit against Honesdale en route to a stunning 46-43 Division One win.
“It’s very frustrating,” said an emotionally drained Tim Wood said in the Honesdale lockerroom afterward. “This team has so much potential, but we’re just not living up to it. Don’t get me wrong: DV played a really good game, but this is one that we should’ve won.”
The devastating setback before a raucous Red Palace crowd sent Honesdale’s overall record to 7-7. The Red & Black close out the first half of the regular season with a 2-5 mark.
Next up for the Hornets is a non-league contest with East Stroudsburg South. Weather permitting, that game will be played today at 3:00 p.m. right here in the Maple City.
Solid Start
On a night when Blue Ridge Cable set up shop to televise the game, Honesdale leapt out to a quick 5-0 advantage.
Kevin Miller led the way from his point guard position. The sophomore sharp shooter hammered home a couple of very deep treys en route to a team best 13.
“Kevin played a very good game tonight,” Coach Wood said. “He’s still young, but he can be a very calming influence on this team when the need arises.”
David Bierema turned in a stellar all-round effort for Honesdale. The 6’4” senior forward battled his way to eight points in the paint, pulled down six rebounds, induced a pair of offensive fouls and earned rave reviews from his mentor.
“David really gave us his all,” Coach Wood said. “He got in there and mixed it up at both ends. He hit a couple of pretty big buckets and played solid defense.”
Honesdale sprinted out to a 5-0 first quarter lead, but saw that advantage disappear in the face of DV’s two pronged offensive assault.
Brandon Angradi paced the Warriors. A 6’3” senior and Division One’s second leading scorer, Angradi would close out his evening with 16 points...including three key free throws down the stretch.
He was aided & abetted by Brent Fragola. A 6’ junior guard, Fragola proved to be a consistent force all game long. He hit six field goals, buried both of his free throw attempts and wound up with 14.

“Between the Lackawanna League and AAU, I’ve probably gone up against those kids 10 times now,” Coach Wood said. “They are both very good players...as they showed tonight.”
Down the Stretch
Delaware Valley took a 19-17 lead at intermission, but Honesdale roared right back to seize the advantage after three periods, 32-31.
In fact, the Red & Black still held a 5-point lead with three minutes left in regulation before the bottom finally fell out.
“We didn’t take care of the ball every single possession like we’ve been preaching,” said Coach Wood. “We made a couple of really bad mistakes late in the fourth quarter and it wound up costing us the game.”
DV held the Hornets to just three points down the stretch with relentless defense and hard work on the glass at both ends.
Jordan Meyer contributed seven points and three steals, while Tim Hart (3 pts) and Chris Nagel (2 pts) rounded out the scoring.
