On the heels of an up & down first half, the Hornets are more determined than ever to challenge for a second half Division One crown.
Honesdale’s boys varsity hoops squad struggled to a 2-5 record, but Coach Tim Wood is optimistic about the future. He points out that his lads held 4th quarter leads in three of their five Lackawanna League losses...a fact that bodes well for the second time around.
“We proved in the first half that we can compete with everyone in this division,” he told TWI Sports. “Now, our job is to go out and prove we can win on a consistent basis. We need to close teams out when we have the chance.”
Honesdale will open its second half title quest with a tall order: a home game against Abington.
“They’re a very good team with one of the best players around in JC Show,” Coach Wood said. “Abington will try to slow things down and dictate tempo. We can’t let them do that. We have to play our game.”
By the Numbers
Jordan Meyer, Kevin Miller and Jesse O’Connell led the Red & Black attack in the opening half.
Meyer, a high-flying senior power foward, finished among the division’s elite in both scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.2 rpg).
“Jordan has been improving daily as an all-around player,” said Coach Wood. “He’s making better decisions about when to attack the basket and when to rein it in a little bit.”
Miller directs Honesdale’s offensive assault from his point guard position. Kevin averages 10.7 ppg and will look to shoulder even more of the scoring load.
“We’re looking to get the ball to Kevin more on the wing so he can have some more options on offense,” said Coach Wood.
O’Connell struggled at times finding his offensive niche, but still managed a solid 8.6 ppg in the first half. He’s a senior and one of the Lackawanna League’s most vaersatile scorers.
“Jesse needs to be more consistent,” Coach Wood said. “I definitely want to see Jesse step up and take on more of a leadership role.”
