Western Wayne had its hands full with a scrappy Lackawanna Trail squad Wednesday evening in Varden.
The Wildcats split their first four bouts with the visiting Lions, but then went on a rampage and took control once and for all.
Manny Mirailh and Beau Fuller provided that crucial spark, posting back-to-back falls in leading the ‘Cats to an eventual 46-23 win.
“I really like what I saw from the kids,” Coach Dante Terenzio said. “We’re starting to peak at just the right time. I think we’re creating some momentum for district duals.”
With this impressive win, Western Wayne upped its Lackawanna League record to a perfect 4-0. The Wildcats face their biggest test of the season thus far when they travel to Valley View on Saturday morning.
“That’s going to be a pretty intense atmosphere over there,” Coach Terenzio said. “They’re going to pumped up for us so we’d better be ready to roll.”
This Division Two showdown is slated for noon in Archbald.
On the Mat
Josh Brown got Western Wayne off on the right foot Wednesday at the Varden Garden, posting a first period pin at 113.
After Trail accepted a forfeit and earned a technical fall in the next two bouts, the Wildcats took over.
Morgan Fuller ignited a flurry of team points with a 7-2 decision over Cooper Rosiak at 138.
Mirailh followed with a physically dominating performance at 145. Manny manhandled Trail’s Andrew O’Brien en route to a second period fall (3:08).
“Manny is a very physical wrestler,” Coach Terenzio said. “He just brings it every time he walks out on the mat. He’s in your face from the opening whistle.”
Beau Fuller also earned high marks from his mentor. A battle-tested junior, Fuller hammered out a 6-1 fist period lead before finally putting the clamps to Jeremy Greenly in 2:31.
“Beau was just awesome out there,” Coach Terenzio said. “Greenly is a pretty good wrestler and he gave Beau some trouble the last time they faced each other. “It was good to see him go out there and take control. It really set the tone for us at the upper weights.”
Conner Rosensweet and Joseph Ingaglio each authored a big win for Western Wayne on this night.
Rosensweet continued his season-long pinning rampage, needing a mere 21 seconds to clamp Trail’s Zac Goodrich at 195.
After Matt Rosensweet gave up a fall to 2-time PIAA state medalist Eric Laytos at 220, Ingaglio sealed the deal on the win.
Joseph powered his way to a 3-0 decision over Ben Lehman at 285.
