Honesdale trailed Abington Heights by five points with less than two minutes remaining in Friday night's Lackawanna League battle at the Red Palace.
However, as a huge hometown crowd shouted itself hoarse, the Hornets fought back to win their most important game of the season to date. Thanks to a pair of free throws by Jordan Meyer with 40 seconds to go in regulation, the local lads sent the Comets back to Clarks Summit saddled with a 51-50 loss.
"Seriously: this is the biggest win of my career so far," Hornet senior Jesse O'Connell told TWI Sports just moments afterward in a jubilant lockerroom. "I think this is going to let some people out there know that we can play with anybody. Scranton, Abington Heights...anybody."
O'Connell was Honesdale's biggest threat all night long. Jesse buried one huge shot after another, played superb defense and cleaned the glass to the tune of a team-best seven rebounds. It was a breakout performance that wasn't lost on his mentor.
"Jesse played an outstanding all-round game and that's the kind of thing we want to see from him every night," said Coach Tim Wood. "I'm very happy for Jesse. Every single kid on this team played a role tonight, but he was the difference.
O'Connell finished the night with 20 points...including four long treys that left the Comets reeling. He was aided & abetted by Meyer (15 pts) and Kevin Miller (9 pts).
Honesdale won't have much time to celebrate this electrifying Division One win, though. Thanks to Thursday's ice storm, the Hornets are right back on the hardwood Saturday for a rare afternoon game against archrival Wallenpaupack Area.
Opening tip for that contest is slated for 1:30 p.m. at the Red Palace.
Score by Quarters...
HON (8-7) 13 10 11 17 - 51
AH (13-3) 11 13 14 12 - 50
