One of the region's most exciting and prestigious high school wrestling events gets underway this evening at two sites in Northeastern PA.
The District Two Team Duals Tournament is set to begin at 5:00 p.m., hosted once againt by Pittston Area and Lake Lehman high schools.
According to D-2 wrest-ling chairman Jay Starnes, this year's edition of the tourneyshould be one of the most entertaining in a very long time.
"There's a lot of parity in both brackets," Starnes told TWI Sports. "The Lackawanna League teams are very strong and the Wyoming Valley Conference is really solid, too. I'm expecting some extremely competitive matches."
Wrestling starts at 5:00 p.m. with the first two quarterfinal matches, followed by the second set at 6:30 p.m. The four winners meet at 8:00 p.m. in the semis. Finals for both brackets will then be held at Pittston Area Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
Class AAA
To the surprise of absolutely no one, Delaware Valley will be the top seed in the Class AAA bracket.
The Warriors are the tournament's defending champs and recently put the finishing touches on another Lackawanna League title. DV went 5-0 in Division One this season and has yet to be challenged in a dual meet scenario.
Coach Lou DeLauro's squad opens its District Duals gold medal quest with a quarterfinal battle against Hazleton Area. The Cougars carved out a 3-3 regular season record this year and earned the Wyoming Valley Conference Class AAA wildcard.
Honesdale is also on the mat at 5:00 p.m. The Hornets fought their way to a 3-2 mark in Division One action, finishing in a tie for second behind DV.
Coach Ryan Chulada's lads have a tough task right off the bat with an opening round clash with Wyoming Valley West. The Spartans rolled to a sparkling 5-1 record and are the WVC's second seed.
Wilkes Barre Coughlin is the top-ranked team out of the Wyoming Valley after winning five of six regular season matches. The Crusaders take to the mat at 6:30 p.m. for an encounter with Scranton.
The Knights (3-2) were competitive in all but one of their Division One dual meets this winter, earning the Lackawanna League's wild card entry into the tournament.

The Patriots posted a 4-2 mark and are the WVC's third seed. The Invaders, who won a pair of razor thin matches against Honesdale and Paupack this year, went 3-2 in the division and locked down the Lackawanna League #3 seed.
Class AA
Meanwhile on the Class AA scene, Western Wayne will once again be the "top dog" at Lake Lehman this evening.
The Wildcats are coming off yet another Lackawanna League crown, going undefeated (6-0) in Division Two.
Coach Dante Terenzio's boys won this tournament two years ago and are focused on earning another trip to states.
"That's been the main goal even before the season started," Coach Terenzio said. "We really want to get back to Hershey and make some noise this time."
Western Wayne takes that first step on the road to the PIAA Championships at 5:00 p.m. against the WVC's wildcard team, Wyoming Area (3-3).
Dallas went 5-1 this season and finished second in its conference. The Mountaineers will go toe-to-toe with Lackawanna Trail, a squad that posted a 4-2 Divison Two record.
Lake Lehman, the Class AA tournament host, takes the mat at 6:30 p.m. for a quarterfinal match against Scranton Prep. The Knights were undefeated in the WVC this year (6-0) and should pose a formidable challenge for the Cavaliers, who are the Lackawanna League's wild card entry (3-3).
The final quarterfinal match of the evening will pit Wilkes Barre Meyers against Valley View.
The Mohawks (4-2) are the WVC's third seed, while the resurgent Cougars (5-1) sport a #2 seed out of Division Two.
