HONESDALE -

Katie Megargel loves animals, and takes seriously when animals are in need. Having just finished her junior year at Honesdale High School, she became involved in a cheer leading camp where they raised $100 for Dessin Animal Shelter. Her Senior Project, she helped teach cheers to 20 younger girls, from 2nd through 5th grade. Donations were raised supporting Dessin.
She said she’d like to be a volunteer at Dessin Animal Shelter. Katie has a Chihuahua and a Pomeranian at home, as well as two cats. In the last school year she also decided to turn away meat from her diet, concerned for what animals destined for the dinner table may endure.
Her goal is to become a psychologist. “How people think is interesting,” she said. “I’d like to help them.” In August she will be attending a science camp at the Naval Hospital in Maryland, which she said will be able to apply to the field of psychology. At school she is a member of the Diversity Club. One of their club activities included talking to 7th graders at the Wayne Highlands Middle School and at Damascus. Katie shared with them about peer pressure.
Cheerleading has been a big interest of hers through school- since she was five years old She said her Mom has been a “second coach” helping her to be a cheerleader.
The daughter of Eric and Kim Megargel of Honesdale, she has one brother, Eric. Her brother, who just graduated, is joining the Navy, and Katie added she will miss him. Her brother, who is the subject of the next “Good Kid” column, sat next to her, and remarked he loves his sister very much.
