Veteran benefits to be explained
HONESDALE - A representative from the Governor's Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center will be at the Honesdale City Hall, 958 Main Street, on Monday, July 7 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. He can help veterans who have questions about VA benefits or would like help with filing a claim. He can also assist vets who would like to apply for medical benefits through the VA Health Care system. All veterans, peacetime and wartime are welcome. Rep. Major sets office hours
LAKEWOOD - State Rep. Sandra Major (R-111th) has scheduled office hours at the Preston Township building in Lakewood from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, July 10. The building is on Route 370 (Crosstown Highway). Major’s legislative district includes Buckingham, Lebanon, Manchester, Mount Pleasant, Oregon, Scott and Preston townships, part of Clinton Township and the borough of Starrucca in Wayne County.   Photo license center closed for 4th
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced that all driver license and photo centers, including its full service center in Harrisburg, will be closed Friday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.
Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services Web site, www.dmv.state.pa.us. 
Driver and vehicle online services are available 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week and include driver license renewal, photo ID and vehicle registrations, driver-history services, change of address and exam scheduling. 
There are no additional fees for using online services.

Reverse Mortgage seminar set

Christmas in July Jewelry Sale held
CARBONDALE - Members of the Marian Community Hospital Auxiliary feel it is never too early to start your Christmas Shopping!   The group will be hosting a Silver Sojourner Jewelry Sale on Wednesday, July 23, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Marian Hall Auditorium located at 141 Salem Avenue, Carbondale.  Jewelry available will include both silver and authentic gemstone pieces.  Prices start at $5.

Auxiliary hosts Fifty/Fifty Five Hundred raffle
CARBONDALE - Marian Community Hospital Auxiliary is selling tickets for its “50/50 Five Hundred” raffle drawing.  Tickets are $3 each.  Drawings will be conducted on September 12, September 19 and September 26.  On each of the three days, one prize of either $500 or 50% of proceeds taken in will be awarded.
 Following each drawing all tickets are added back into the pool allowing each ticket holder the opportunity to win a $500 prize up to three times!  To purchase tickets, call 281-1072.  Only 1,000 tickets will be sold, and all returns must be into the hospital by September 11.

HHS announces registration for new school year
HONESDALE - Moving into the area? Plan on sending your son/daughler to Honesdale High School? Call their office to pre-register your child for grades 9 through 12. All prior school records must be received in the school office before an appointment is made to schedule them for the new school year. The deadline to pre-register is August 1, 2008.
Because some schools close for the summer, registration needs to be done as soon as possible. Please stop by or cal 253-2046 between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and ask for Mrs. Wagner in the Guidance office
School begins Monday, August 25, 2008.  There will not be any registering of new students during the first week of school

Pleasant Mount Library hosts reading program
PLEASANT MOUNT - Join "Catch the Reading Bug" this summer at the Pleasant Mount Library and discover the amazing world of insects. The 2008 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult. The program will begin on Thursday, July 10th at 6 p.m, and will feature local author, Lindsay Barrett George.
On Thursday, July 17 at 6 p.m. there will be a program with Mr. Charlie Kinbar, President of the Wayne-Pike Bee Keepers Association. Swarm over to the Pleasant Mount Library for  programs, stories, prizes, and a free book upon completion of the program. Registration for this Summer Reading Program is appreciated. Hawley UM Church hosts VBS
HAWLEY- “The Pirates Who Don’t do Anything” is the “Veggie Tale” theme for Vacation Bible School at Hawley United Methodist Church, August 4-12. Yard sale to raise funds for student
HONESDALE - Wayne Highlands Middle School student Sarah DeCrotie is among a select group of highly acclaimed students in Pennsylvania to attend the National Young Leaders State Conference, sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.
Sarah is participating in a number of fundraisers to raise money to attend the Conference in October. A yard sale is being held today at her Nana’s house, 102 Shady Lane, Honesdale. You can also meet Sarah at the Street Festival and Sidewalk Sales in Honesdale, July 24, 25, and 26 when she will be face painting and holding a bake sale.  VBS planned at St. Vincent’s
HONESDALE - St. John's Vacation Bible School is scheduled July 8th- July 11th, 9 to 11:30 a.m. daily, at St. Vincent's School.
The theme is “God's BIG Backyard... Where kids have a blast serving Jesus!”
Children ages kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to attend.   Come explore Bible stories with the Backyard Bible Club.  Learn songs at the Backyard Bash. Presbyterians offer pre-k class
HONESDALE - Not sure if your child is ready for a full day kindergarten program?  You are certainly not alone.  The Honesdale Presbyterian Church Christian Preschool is starting a transitional pre-k class for students who will be 5 years old before October 15.  The class will mirror the school calendar year, but will run from 8 to noon Mon.-Fri. (after hours care is available at the Preschool from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily).  They hired a certified teacher with more than 8 years of elementary education teaching experience with a masters degree in elementary education to teach the new program.

Museum prices noted
HONESDALE - The new rates for the Wayne County Historical Society Museum, 810 Main St., Honesdale, are as follows: $5 for adults age 18 and up; $3 for ages 5-17 and free if under 5; members are also admitted free. Museum hours are presently 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. Call (570)253-3240 for more information.

Fourth of July Book and Bake Sale planned
HAWLEY-  Books are wanted by First Book-Wayne/Pike for their used book sale on Friday July 4th in front of the Hawley Public Library.  Please call Dottie at 226-3368, Lindsay at 253-4858, or Jean (evenings only) 253-4373 to find out where to drop off your good used books.
Their mission is to provide new books to children in need in Wayne and Pike counties.  Proceeds will be used to purchase new books.  There are three ways in which First Book-Wayne/Pike receives books to distribute to children in need to enable them to build their home libraries.  First books can be ordered from special catalogs provided to First Book by publishing partners at an average cost of no more than $2.50 per book. Second is the First Book National Book Bank (FBNBB) which allows them to get a limited number of books per year for 25¢ shipped, and third books can be ordered from the First Book Marketplace at an average cost of $1.85.
They are also looking for a few more people who are interested in being active members of the board.

Childbirth Education Classes offered
HONESDALE - Childbirth education classes will be offered by Wayne Memorial Hospital in Wayne and Pike Counties.
There are four classes scheduled from June through November 2008.  Each class is a four week series. All classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Two classes are set at Wayne Memorial Hospital, 601 Park Street, Honesdale: June 25 to July 16 and September 24 to October 15.  Two classes are planned at Pike County Family Health Center, Route 739, Lords Valley:  August 13 to September 3 and November 5 to 26.

WW Class of ‘73 to meet
WAYMART- The Western Wayne class of 1973, which was the first graduating class in the school’s history, is planning their 35th class reunion.  The reunion is scheduled to be held Saturday, September 27th  at The Lodge at Keen Lake, 45 Warren Rix Drive by Waymart.
  Committee members are seeking updated and/or missing addresses for all 1973 Western Wayne class members.  They would like to have the biggest turn out ever, and therefore, the committee is asking relatives, friends, and community members to forward any contact information for 1973 WW class members to schmoyle@aol.com or call Beth (Moyle) DeLancy at 203-215-5943.

Lupus support group meets

 Southern Wayne Business & Community Association to meet
HAMLIN — The Southern Wayne Business & Community Association, an action committee of the Southern Wayne Chamber of Commerce, cordially invites all members of the community to come participate in the planning of activities and projects as the committee reaches out to the surrounding communities.
 This group has assisted the Southern Wayne Chamber with a “Guide to Businesses and Community Services” booklet that was distributed in 2007.  Among other future activities in the planning stage is the beautification of the Southern Wayne area that the Southern Wayne Chamber serves, and much needed Community Events Calendar.  The committee meets on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 at the Community Library of Lake and Salem Township.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

HHS Class of 1983
HONESDALE- Honesdale High School Class of 1983 is holding it’s 25 Class Reunion on August 30, 2008 at Ehrhardt's Lakeside Restaurant. More information to come. Any class members wanting to help can call Maureen at 253-5411 or Nancy at 937-4402.
