State inmates now being housed at the Wayne County Correctional Facility are providing boarding money for the county. That’s  a switch from the days before the new prison was opened in 2008, when the county spent great amounts to board excess inmates elsewhere.
Warden Kevin Bishop reported at the Prison Board meeting, Tuesday, that 22 inmates from the Pa. Department of Corrections (DOC)  are presently lodged here.
The first state prisoners arrived October 14. As of the end of October, there were 18 state prisoners, whose  cost of care raised $9,900 for the county of Wayne. The County reached the agreement with the DOC after the state requested cell space to help alleviate a statewide shortage.
The daily average population for Wayne county Prison inmates is 93. During October, they had 60 intakes. The new county prisoners included six females and the most common crime landing them in jail was DUI (eight instances). Drug crimes followed with seven cases.
Prisoner work detail assignments in October included painting at Grace Episcopal Church, Hawley Library, the former Work Release Center and Gouldsboro EMS. They also helped renovate Ritz Theater and move carpeting at the Area Agency on Aging.
