Bethel Woods is committed to being a strong community and educational partner,
bringing together a diverse array of people and experiences that add to a rich
cultural life in our region and providing enriching, engaging and educational
experiences that broaden exposure to history, the arts and culture. In 2009 Bethel
Woods' Community Outreach and Education programs benefitted over 35,000 people, and
this year exciting programs are planned through the fall, which include
opportunities for individuals of all ages, as well as through area schools and
community organizations.
The One World Culture Concert Series for youth and families will feature several
performances this year. One World is a new initiative within the Community &
Education programs. Its goal is to empower youth to be positive, engaged members of
their community and the world, by fostering a respect for themselves and their
talents, as well as exploring the diversity of the world. Programs within the One
World experience will use history, education, culture and the arts to achieve this
outcome. Jeffrey Friedberg of the Bossy Frog Band will open the series on Sunday,
August 1 at 2 p.m., with a special performance for young children that get the whole
family dancing and clapping. On Sunday, November 14, celebrate American Indian
Heritage Month with Martha Redbone, who blends her Native and African American
heritages in participatory performances. Both events are free, but advance tickets
are required and available at the Box Office or online, where we'll also announce
additional performances.
Bethel Woods and The Janice Center<http://janicecenter.com/> have again teamed up to
offer Music is Magic: Kids & Music Workshop this August. The popular program to
teach children the joy of music debuted in 2009 and became an instant hit with local
families. Taught by Tanya Cohen of The Janice Center, "Music is Magic" is an
outgrowth of the popular Music Together experience, a nationwide franchise which
taps into the innate musical instincts of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and
kindergartners and cultivates an early appreciation for the arts.
The Janice Center has developed an original 4-week session held exclusively at
Bethel Woods featuring songs, beats, rhythms and instruments expressing a '60s
theme. In addition to the distinct music, the classes integrate the Bethel Woods
experience into the weekly one-hour sessions at 10:00 a.m. and Noon every Friday in
August (6, 13, 20 and 27th) in the beautiful Event Gallery and The Great Lawn
(weather permitting). Classes are open to children 0-5 years old with their parents
(or other adult) who are required to participate. Central to the Music Together
approach is that young children learn best from the powerful role model of
parents/caregivers who are actively making music. The cost for the four week
program is $106 per child ($60 for an additional sibling) and includes a CD,
songbook and Janice Center shirt. In addition, registrants may also purchase a "buy
one, get one free adult lawn ticket to select Bethel Woods concerts, and will
receive a 40% discount on a single item purchase in The Museum Shop (valid on days
of the Music is Magic workshop). Register at

"Music is Magic was one of our most successful programs in 2009," said Elaine
Muscara, Community Outreach Coordinator for Bethel Woods. "The participating
children and parents experienced a unique opportunity to benefit from the wonderful
Music Together program as well as the Bethel Woods surroundings."
Local community groups should also remember that it's not too late to get free lawn
tickets for a select concert for your non-profit organization through our Experience
the Arts--Ticket Access Program. Registration information and a list of eligible
performances are available at
www.BethelWoodsCenter.org<http://www.BethelWoodsCenter.org>.
On Sunday, August 21, The Museum at Bethel Woods will again host its third annual
Educator Free Day, with free museum admission for all educators, who are invited to
tour the museum galleries, learn about school programs, and see the unveiling of the
museum's newest education program--the Travelling Trunks. Educators will also learn
more about our six programs available for class trips for elementary through college
students.
This fall, Bethel Woods popular Encore Program will feature an intimate
school-group-only performance by Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers, on Friday, October
22. Encore performances offer a special opportunity for young people to experience a
variety of musical styles, and learn more about them from respected professional
musicians. Registration is available on-line.
Celebrate Halloween at The Museum at Bethel Woods with horror films of the 1960s
during the Fall Film Series. The series runs Friday nights from Oct. 15-Nov. 5, with
screenings beginning at 7pm. Each screening will include an introduction that
situates the films within their historical context. Learn how the socio-political
events of the decade, from the women's movement to Vietnam and more, translated into
silver screen thrillers.
