I’m pretty sure most of you don’t pay enough attention to your government representatives (local, county, state or national). I’m absolutely sure you don’t let them know you’re paying attention (often enough)! You really should, for your own protection!
Politicians are like any other dilettante (or teenager) you’ve known. If you ignore ‘em, they’ll take advantage of you. Give most teenagers a quiet couple hours, a back road, a backseat, a little background music, and you’ll soon need a second job (to support grandbabies).
With politicians it’s much worse!! No backroad, backseat, or music needed.
They’ll even take full advantage of you, in broad daylight! They’ll happily manage (waste) as much tax money from your current income as you let ‘em. And given todays economic morass, most of your retirement income too! This becomes acutely true whenever you don’t pay 'em, enough attention! They’ll find more ways to spend (your) money, than a teenager can find back roads.
Sure, it’s always been this way to a certain extent. I mean, since the roads have always needed pavin’ an' plowin’, streetlights need replacing’ and so on. Plus, someone has to collect a salary to be around to turn out the lights (or perform other little services) once the politicians down at the capital (or town hall) are done playin’ games for the night.
But! It used to be that those things (and performing a few actual services for you and me) were enough to keep the politicians occupied! They could even be counted on to get most of it done on the cheap, so to speak. Using low bids, deals with ex brother-in-laws, mistresses (boyfriends?) etc.. That is..., it worked that way, long as the payoffs from lobbyists covered the occasional trip to some warm locale for a “governmental conference” every year or so?! The politicians would generally leave you (an me) some share of our paychecks.
But during these difficult economic times that’s all changin’, and fast! Apparently it’s getting hard (for the politicians) to maintain even the minimum level services you and I require (at costs acceptable to them and us!).
It’s gotten so bad, they’ve begun to spend an inordinate amount of their time (on your dime) deliberatin’ new and improved ways to use (steal) more of your money! All to merely maintain the appearance of “lookin’ out” for you and me!!
This latest “racket” certain politcians have come up with, is dazzling in it’s audacity!
They want to charge us poor dimwits out here in the hinterlands for (state) police protection!!
Those of us lucky enough (smart enough) to live out here, in the rural environs of this beauttiful commonwealth have gotten by with minimal police “protection” for a long time (since the country was formed!).
Besides, we actually only need police services on rare occasions. Automobile accidents, domestic disputes, raidin’ a still (maybe?). The rest of the time, our “police protection” needs consist primarily of tryin’ not to get stopped for speeding.
Way too much of our (rising) crime rate derives from an influx of folks bringing (or letting their children bring) bad habits along with them from those very cities where they have all that “paid for" police protection!
But now some dimwit (Harrisburg) politician(s) figure we (dimwit rural folks) oughta “chip in” for police protection! Why? Because people in big towns “pay” for police departments. Correct me if I’m wrong..., but isn’t that because they have more crime?!
This latest attempted foray into (y)our wallet for more tax money? This specious “Fee for Services” (like it’s a remotely legitimate idea) is simply a beginning (continuation) of harebrained ideas desperate politicians will invent to obtain (waste) more of your money!
