Finally! The talk is done. The plannin’ an’ regulatin’, the studyin’, an the (endless) talkin’ is done! Well..., maybe the talkin’ isn’t completely “done”, it never is! But at this point that talkin’s been relegated to mere bitc*&%! Which remains forever a part of the process doesn’t it?
Back in the early ‘90s the first (serious) talk started concerning what to do about the traffic (and parking) “problems” on Main Street. After many years (7 or 8?) the local folks and people from PennDot came to an agreement about what to do. All the studyin’ and puzzlin’ (an’ navel gazin’) over the “problem” had led to a mutual (more or less) agreement. That was along about 1999.
The seeds of an answer to help cure the ongoing traffic problems on Main Street had been planted! Appeared at the time the soil was fertile, well-watered and hopefully left out in the sunshine to mature. The requisite number of years would have to pass while PennDot prepared to harvest the crop.
By that, I mean get the (tax-payer) money “in hand” to do the job. At last (if you recall) in late 2006 early 2007 the crop came in! Money was finally available to actually do the job!
Suddenly (no surprise) the talking (bitc*&%) started all over again!! Folks of every stripe, ‘cept maybe prison uniforms (that’s another story) started complaining about any (every) facet of the planned street/bridge project!
Local government officials were (again!) forced to listen to lots of folks..., talking! Many of the same questions that’d been answered in discussions held during the 1990s confabs, came up, All over Again! Apparently lotsa folks hadn’t listened the first time ‘round!? Or they just wanted to get their two cents (and name) in the papers once more?
Eventually one thing (maybe two) brought all the talking (whinin’) to a screechin’ halt. When PennDot finally got tired of it! At which point, they scooped up all the $millions they’d placed on the table for the project..., stomped out the door, and headed for home.
Second thing that mighta helped (?) was when your intrepid columnist wrote about the whole sordid process?
That column ended by informin’ the town fathers (and local citizens) it appeared as if the town was incapable of simply makin’ a deal, shaking hands and stickin’ to it! (might not have “helped” all that much?).
Mighta just been those local folks watchin’ all that project money goin’ off down the road! Could be that scared ‘em into signing on the dotted line? But I recall a board member quotin’ from the column during the final town meeting about the project. The project got the go ahead.
So now it’s nearly finished! The bridges are done, paving’s near complete, lights are hung, final traffic lines are being painted.
By the way, I think a little compliment might be in order here.
Have you noticed all the work (rapidly) gittin’ done by the workin’ folks actually doing this job? Workin’ nights, weekends, Sundays, pretty much 24/7, rain or shine (enduring all the glares an’ complaints about traffic delays all these months?).
I personally felt someone ought to let these guys know what a great job they’ve been doin’! So I stopped by the other night (night!) and did just that.
Remember folks, these jobs usually go to big “out of town” construction companies. I’m sure local merchants are benefitting too. These guys (and their families) spend their salaries right here at home, ya know? We oughta be proud we’ve got local folks capable of this kind of great work (and work ethic).
Back to the story..., Newspaper articles are being written and published faster than during an election! Folks are being informed (warned?) about impending changes in traffic directions..., one-way (or another).
Inevitably the “Talk” (complaints of every nature) is proliferating again! Just check out the comments about those news articles on the local papers website! Seems most complaints center on the switch to one-way traffic (!) along the two primary north/south arteries through town.
Well golly gee!! Fancy that! By the uproar people are making about traffic goin’ in one direction, you’d think it was the introduction (reintroduction?) of roundabouts! C’mon folks, how hard can it be!?
After all, you can only drive yer car in one direction anyway! If you’ve ever driven outside our little hamlet through most any bigger town, you’ve probly driven on a one-way street (or two). You can do this folks!
I Don’t Know About You..., If one-way traffic scares ya that much, ya oughta try flyin’.
