That headline nicely sums up my own little haphazard, country-boy assessment of the big party presidential candidates. But I’ll proffer a bit more scholarly cogitational analysis for yer edification (nice huh?).
Obama: Played volunteer lawyer a coupla years. Later a few as state senator? Then in 2004 somehow wrangled a spot to speak at the democratic convention (wow!). That speech got him the chance to get elected United States Senator (the incumbent had retired). Once there, votin’ “I’m here” most of the time, passin’ no legislation. Somehow he did pass “Go”? Senator scarcely two years before declarin’ himself presidential material!
McCain: Served Two full terms as a U.S. Congressman. Then twenty-two (22) years as a U.S. Senator (still servin’!). Authored numerous bills over the years. Often upsetting his republican buddies, by voting with the other guys. Whenever he thought it was the right thing to do. No Comparison.
Obama: He’s a brilliant speaker. I won’t say “wordsmith” ‘cuz I don’t know that he comes up with his words himself? But he certainly knows how to deliver ‘em! Occasionally soundin’ like an “ole-time religion” revival preacher? Ya know, talks cheap. But doin’ it well, surely puts a nice shine to it?
McCain: He’s a kinda low-key talker with an unfortunately droll way of speakin’ to crowds. Still, his words are often his own! And they’re pretty impressive in substance, If ya take time to listen (or read ‘em). Demonstrating a complete understanding of what’s important. One on one, across the table from world leaders (or enemies) he makes his point with clarity and force. I’ll take the guy with a proven record and fortitude speakin’ for me, every time! No comparison.
Most days you might not notice, but we’re a nation at war (pretty much always have been?).
While you might not think about it enough. The single most important job our president performs, is bein’ Commander in Chief! Keep in mind that puts him in charge of every General, every private, every rifle, airplane, bomb, ship and missile in our war chest! Could it be that some rudimentary knowledge of what “The Military” is, might prove important?! It’s capabilities, limits, maybe even knowin’ how it functions?
Doesn’t matter whether you agree with what we’re doing today, fighting the “War on Terror”! The folks we’re up against know it matters. They’re never going to let up on us. Until we kill enough of them to make ‘em stop tryin’ to kill us! You can take it to the bank. They’ll continue to gauge their chances of killin’ us, based largely on what kind of man they figure’s in charge of those weapons I referenced above.
McCain: Military service? Decorated naval aviator, retired 22 years service. Not one, but several incidents of heroism behind him. Not to mention five and a half years a POW. That alone revealed his courage, strength, commitment to his country. His fellow active-duty comrades (and his faith in God). His uniform sparkles, covered with medals of valor!
Obama: Military service? Well, in his twenties he did attend several Ivy League schools. Clearly he must’ve learned the Pledge of Allegiance at some point prior to that. Oh, and he’s got a medal (new flag pin) he sometimes wears. No comparison!
Some Drawbacks?
McCain: Ok, he’s got a few years on him? Recall President Reagan did OK, while even older? (by golly, I’m still hangin’ in there myself!). I’m bettin’ intestinal fortitude alone will keep him on the job long as he’s needed.
Obama: Ok, his ears are just way too big and he’s got that scary-funny name (geez, like some in my own family). Mind ya..., No Comparisons!
I Don’t Know About You..., I realize in these “modern” times we get a “twofer” when we elect a president. So...,
Ms. Michelle Obama: She’s beautiful, an Ivy League educated attorney. Seems she’s spent most of her time since graduating, hangin’ pretty close to those Ivy League school pals. She supports her husbands (nascent) political career. And now, Finally, after livin’ half a lifetime as an American? She says Baracks campaign has, “... finally made her proud to be an American...!”
Mrs. Cindy McCain: She’s beautiful, educated, rich and a teacher. However, her volunteer work around the world started over twenty years ago! Working in third world countries numerous times in terrible places with poor children (adopting one!). Worked helping people clear land mines. Sits on the board of her family business (sellin’ beer, gotta love that!). Has always supported her husbands long, distinguished political career. As our next first lady it appears she’d make us all (me) proud! No comparison.
