- A 15-year-old girl was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban that crashed on Goosepond Road, killing three boys, said Wayne County District Attorney Janine Edwards.
The investigation is ongoing and criminal charges may be filed.
The deceased teens from Bucks County, Cullen Keffer, Ryan Lesher and Shamus Digney, all 15, died after the rollover crash at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday near the Wallenpaupack Lake Estates, state police said.
The driver and two other juveniles in the vehicle received medical treatment at hospitals in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre and were released.
Keffer was found on the edge of the road and died of multiple traumatic injuries, Wayne County Coroner Edward Howell reported.
Lesher and Digney were pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital in Scranton.
Lesher died from blunt force trauma to the head, and Digney died from multiple traumatic injuries, said Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland.
The Suburban was registered to the father of the 15-year-old female driver. The father owns a home at Wallenpaupack Lake Estates.
The driver and a 16-year-old girl, both from the Westchester, N.Y. area, picked up the four boys at the development and went out for breakfast.
Upon their return to the development the vehicle traveled around a left curve, off the road and flipped several times.
A witness told investigators it appeared the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Edwards stated, "This is a parent's worst nightmare and a terrible tragedy that the Pennsylvania State Police will investigate to the fullest."
Edwards commended state police, the Lakeville Fire Company and other emergency personnel "in responding so quickly to the scene and handling it so professionally."
Edwards said, "I thank all of the first responders for their vigilance and care to all the teenagers in this accident.
The three deceased teens were incoming sophomores at Council Rock High School South in suburban Philadelphia.
A statement on the school's website said, "It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the deaths of three sophomores who attend Council Rock High School South.
They were involved in a terrible automobile accident on Saturday in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Council Rock offers its sincere condolences to the families of these students and to all who are grieving this terrible loss."
