SCRANTON - An inmate at the federal prison in Canaan Township will serve additional time for assaulting two correctional officers, the U.S. attorney's office announced.
Tarmaine Colbert, 36, formerly of Phoenix, was sentenced to 37 months of imprisonment after pleading guilty to the assault, which happened Jan. 12.
U.S. District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion imposed the sentence on Colbert, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for murder.
According to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith, Colbert assaulted the officers when they attempted to do a pat down search of him for weapons.
The inmate punched the two officers in the face, causing minor minor injuries.
Colbert was found to be in possession of a sharpened weapon commonly referred to as a "shank," according to a release.
The case was investigated by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Gurganus prosecuted the case.
