  • - State police on Thursday charged a borough man accused of severely beating two kittens, one of which died due to extreme trauma.
The suspect, Brandon Sullum, 23, said he "lost it" and repeatedly threw one of the domestic short-haired kittens against a wall, according to court documents.
Two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty were filed at the office of District Judge Ted Mikulak in Honesdale.
Sullum is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Sept. 10 at the Wayne County Courthouse.
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Timothy Walker:
Sullum was watching the kittens, Mary and Jane, at his residence on Smith Lane.
Between July 27 and 28 the suspect repeatedly threw one of the kittens against a bedroom and kitchen wall, causing fractures, bleeding and severe trauma.
"His girlfriend and mother came to the apartment and witnessed him crying with 'Mary,' the kitten, in his hands," said the affidavit.
The kitten was bleeding, struggling to breathe and "there were blood stains all over the wall."
The kitten was taken to Cherry Ridge Animal Clinic, where X-rays determined it suffered a large amount of fractures and severe blood loss. The kitten died the same day.
Medical history indicated the kitten had been taken to the clinic for a hip fracture on July 2.
The second kitten suffered head fractures as a result of being beaten.
That kitten was taken to the clinic on Aug. 1 with several skull fractures and severe swelling and edema of the head.
Police said the kitten's head was the size of a grapefruit but it is recovering.
Page 2 of 2 - The affidavit states, "Furthermore, Sullum admitted to his mother ... that he 'lost it' and threw 'Mary' against a wall five times. In the past he reported to the Cherry Ridge Animal Clinic that (a) box spring fell on 'Mary' causing a hip fracture."
It was reported that both kittens had been taken to the clinic multiple times for abuse-related injuries.
