  • HONESDALE - The Friends of Science Olympiad-Middle School is holding the First Annual “Balls Away- Race for Science” fundraiser.
One-thousand rubber balls will be numbered and released down 14th street from Hillside to West on Roots & Rhythm Day- June 21st, at 11 A.M.
Each ball is being sold for $5.00 and the owner of the first ball to reach the finish line will win $500.00. 2nd place will win $200.00, and 3rd place $100.00.
The proceeds will provide the Science Olympiad team with the necessary equipment to be more competitive at the state level.
The Wayne Highlands Middle School Science Olympiad team has placed in the top 6 at the regional competition for the past 3 years. This qualified them to go to the state competition held at Juniata College.
These trips can be very costly for the team. In order to continue their success, the team needs materials such as robotics equipment, building supplies, field guides, and scientific equipment.
“It puts us on a level playing field,” said Arjun Fulp, Science Olympiad Participant from the Middle School. “In this past competition, our helicopter we built had broken and we didn’t have anything to fall back on. The other schools were able to afford multiple helicopter kits which gave them a better advantage.- this fundraiser is going to help us a lot!”
First and second place teams at the state competition are able to attend the National competition.
How can you help? Buy balls! They can be purchased from Bill O’Neill at Remax Wayne, Brian Fulp at the Himalayan Institute at 570-309-7860, or any Science Olympiad Middle School team member.
We hope you can join us and remember to yell- “Balls Away!!”
