  • The 2013-14 scholastic sports season was an exciting one from start to finish.
Student/athletes from all three local schools turned in unforgettable performances, both individually and as team members.
Now that all the games and matches are over, awards and accolades are starting to pour in from far and wide.
On Friday afternoon, two of the area's top high school golfers were feted for their accomplishments on the Lackawanna League links.
Faith Decker and Rocco Scartelli are both seniors, counting down the days to graduation and the start of a brand new life chapter.
Decker hails from Honesdale, while Scartelli calls Wallenpaupack Area his alma mater.
They paid a visit to The Wayne Independent Friday afternoon to accept generous scholarship grants from the Jan Miller Tuesday Night Men's League.
Lynn Simons, president of this league which calls Cricket Hill home, did the honors. He presented each a check in the amount of $500.
It is the third straight year the league has made such a kind gesture.
    Multi-Sport Star
Decker is one of the most decorated Lady Hornet athletes to graduate in 2014.
Faith spent the first two years of her high school career at Prep. From the moment she arrived on the scene here in Honesdale, though, Decker began turning heads.
Faith was a multi-sport standout who leaves HHS with an impressive resume chock full of athletic accomplishments.
Decker just recently put the finishing touches on a stellar softball career. Over the course of the past two seasons, she carved out a spot for herself among the Lackawanna League elite.
Page 2 of 3 - “I'd put her up against anybody,” Coach Dave Patrisso said on the heels of this year's softball banquet.
Faith is a very fierce competitor. She worked very hard to become one of the best pitchers around. We all knew that when Faith stepped on the field, we had a real chance to win.”
Decker closed out her senior diamond campaign with 11 wins. She pitched a total of 106 innings, fanned 54 and walked only 12.
Decker's ERA was a dazzling 2.76. She also swung some serious lumber, batting .380 for the year with 20 hits and 12 RBIs.
Faith was every bit as impressive on the links.
We were very happy to have her when she came to us from Prep,” Coach Dan O'Neill said.
Faith worked hard on her game and has always been really coachable.”
Decker played two years of varsity golf.
As a junior, she focused most of her time on Honesdale's fledgling girls team. Sadly, she was the lone Lady Hornet left at the start of her senior season.
Undaunted, she battled her way to another spot at the District Two tourney and routinely challenged for a spot in Honesdale's starting line-up.
Faith is just a great kid,” said Coach O'Neill. “She did everything we asked of her and so much more. Faith is very competitive and never intimidated.”
Faith is the daughter of Joe & Rebecca Decker, Honesdale. She will be attending Edinboro University in the fall as a Pre-Med major.
    Focused
Scartelli played a major role on yet another winning golf team at Wallenpaupack Area this past fall.
Page 3 of 3 - A four-year member of the varsity squad, Rocco earned high marks from his mentor, Hall of Fame coach Bob Simons.
One of the best things about Rocco is his work ethic,” Coach Simons said. “He's do anything to help the team ... always went above and beyond.”
Scartelli was honored with an Honorable Mention spot on the Lackawanna League All Stars.
He put the finishing touches on a solid senior season with a varsity record of 7-5-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the league.
Rocco's scoring average was 43.1 on the year.
He isn't the longest off the tee, but Rocco is a very smart golfer,” said Coach Simons said. “He thinks his way around the course. He chipped and putted really well.”
Rocco is the son of Ralph & Robin Scartelli, Paupack. He is headed to Penn State University in the fall to pursue studies in Business.
