HONESDALE - The lot owner where the former Quality Printing & Copying building once stood would like to see a storefront there.

Kayhan Sengun, whose address is listed as Hemlock Farms in Pike County, "loves Honesdale" and would like to build a retail outlet rather than have a parking lot at 531-533 Main Street, a borough official said.

The building was demolished last month.

The owner could not be reached for comment.

Zoning Code Enforcement Officer Daniel Hnatko said he is willing to work with the owner, but their is no timeline on the work.

The vacant, two-story, structurally deficient building was condemned last month.

The 2,500-foot structure had been declared unsafe for human occupancy or use, making it unlawful for any person to occupy it.

It was demolished last month and Hnatko said the work went smoothly, the rubbish being hauled off to a landfill.

Although the final decision on what to do with the property is up to the owner, several council members said they would like to see a storefront at the location.

Council President James Brennan said it would be nice to see a specialty shop at the site.

"I don't want to lose the small-town atmosphere," he said, adding that he encourages having storefronts on Main Street.

Councilman Scott Smith agreed, saying a new business would be a plus to the area.

Councilman Robert Jennings said he believes a proper business at the site would benefit the borough and its citizens.

"A store would be an asset," Jennings said, noting that the lot really wouldn't provide too many parking spaces.

Councilwoman Juanita Pisano also is in favor of a storefront - "something different."

She said, "A parking lot we don't need."

Problems at the old Quality Printing building were first noticed in early April

Hnatko was called to the site when neighbor R3 Hardware reported a partial collapse.

The owner was notified that he had to either repair or demolish, at his expense, the structure based on an engineer's report.

Quality Printing is still operating, at 1008 Main Street, where it's been since 2010.
