  • TEXAS TWP. - An inmate at the Wayne County Correctional Facility was charged with aggravated assault after spitting on two officers, state police said.
Crystal Louise Simpkins, 35, of Lake Ariel, was being transported in a restraint chair from the lobby to an intake room. Two guards were standing in the hallway and Simpkins spat on them, hitting one in the face and the other on the arms and hair, police said.
It was unclear what prompted the attack, which happened at 9:20 a.m. March 6.
Simpkins was sentenced in November 2012 to six to 23 1/2 months on a count of criminal mischief-damage property after she forced her way into a Salem Township residence, breaking a door and smashing windows.
It wasn't the first time Simpkins has run into trouble at the prison.
In July 2013, Simpkins and another inmate, Jennifer Jeanne Guay, 36, were in an argument when Simpkins assaulted Guay.
Simpkins was charged with assault by prisoner, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
    FIRE DESTROYS GARAGE
A fire at 828 Church Street in Hawley was ruled accidental, Trooper John M. Chervanka reported.
Firefighters responded at 4:23 p.m. May 19 to a detached garage with a vehicle inside engulfed in flames.
The fire spread to the house. The garage and vehicle were destroyed and the house sustained a moderate amount of damage.
The homeowner was listed as Philip McKenna, 60.
"The firefighters did an outstanding job of limiting the fire's spread and damage to the main structure," Chervanka said.
The fire started in the engine compartment of the vehicle and was likely caused by ignitable fuels coming in contact with the exhaust manifold, police said.
Page 2 of 2 - No criminal activity was noted or reported, Chervanka said.
A fire was intentionally set and damaged a 2009 Dodge Dakota in a driveway at Ripple Lane in Berlin Township, police said.
The truck sustained moderate exterior damage in the fire at 10 p.m. May 17.
The victim is listed as Brian Liljestrand, 35, of Beach Lake.
Anyone with information is urged to call state police at 963-4323 or 253-7126.
Tara Smith, 36, of Lackawaxen, and two juvenile females were charged with retail theft May 19.
Police said Smith and the two girls were stopped by a loss prevention officer after they tried to steal clothing and groceries from K-Mart on Route 6 in Texas Township, police said.
