Albert John Schariest (Senior), age 80, of Hawley died late Sunday evening, December 8, 2013 at home after a long illness.  He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Eileen Cleary.

Born on July 29, 1933 in Lebanon Township, he was the son of the late John Schariest and Liddie Miller Schariest Hoffman.  Albert left school in the seventh grade to work in a shoe factory and also helped out on his sister's dairy farm.  He enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1952 to 1956 aboard the USS Wisconsin.  Over the course of his lifetime, Albert was employed as a city/charter bus driver, and a carpenter, and a few of his second jobs were house painter, service station attendant and township zoning officer.  For many years, he had his own construction company.  Albert was a man of many talents.  He retired in 2003 as Building Compliance Officer at Wallenpaupack Lake Estates.

Albert first played golf in Cuba during his military stint, and late in life took up the sport again.  He enjoyed many years of membership and league play at Cricket Hill and also enjoyed his weekly poker game.

Albert is survived by his four children: Albert Jr. and his wife Barbara, Elizabeth Hooper and her husband Richard, James and his wife Fili, and Daniel his wife Kathy all of Hawley; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  Also surviving are a brother John of Honesdale and a sister Elma Posdon of Waymart; and many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes there will be no funeral services.  Cremation will be held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory, Archbald.  Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale, PA.  Condolences:
