Narrowsburg author Vera B. Williams’ book, A Chair for My Mother, has been chosen as one of the 100 Greatest Children’s Books of the Last Century by the New York Public Library. A Chair for My Mother (1982) stands alongside 99 other classics such as Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham (1962), E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web (1952), Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are (1963) and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (1998). The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance will host a book signing and reception for author Williams on Sunday, Dec. 15, from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Delaware Arts Center, 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, NY. The reception is free and open to the public. The NY Public Library’s 100 Great Children’s Books list was released concurrent with its acclaimed free exhibition “The ABC Of It: Why Children’s Books Matter,” which opened in June at the Library’s landmark Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. Curated by renowned children’s literature expert Leonard Marcus, the exhibition explores the history and importance of children’s literature and can be viewed until March 23, 2014. Jeanne Lamb, coordinator of youth collections at the library, who along with her colleague, Supervising Librarian Elizabeth Bird, compiled the list, chose, “… titles which have withstood the test of time and are still making that journey from library shelf to home and back again.” Other Vera B. Williams titles including, More, More, More Said the Baby, A Chair for Always, Music, Music for Everyone, and Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe, will also be available for signing.
