Emma Diliberti, Honesdale and the Laurella 4-H Club, was the exhibitor of the Grand Champion 4-H Capon Exhibit at the recent Wayne County 4-H Capon Round-up. Emma’s two dressed 4-H capons weighed 13.5 pounds and 12.5 pounds and received a score of 19.5 points out of a possible 20 points. Brianna Weist, Honesdale and the Pleasant Mount Go-Getters 4-H Club, was the exhibitor of the Reserve Grand Champion 4-H Capon Exhibit. Brianna’s two dressed 4-H capons weighed 12 pounds each and received an exhibit score of 19.3 points out of a possible 20 points. The complete results of the “2013 Wayne County 4-H Capon Round-up” include: Junior Division: Emma Diliberti – Blue ribbon, Junior Division Champion and Grand Champion, Brianna Weist, Blue ribbon, Reserve Junior Division Champion and Reserve Grand Champion and Katie Nebzydoski, Pleasant Mount and Pleasant Mount Go-Getters 4-H Club, Blue ribbon. Intermediate Division: Zachary Curtis, Waymart and Creamton Area 4-H Club, Blue Ribbon and Intermediate Division Champion and Andy Theobald, Waymart and Creamton Area 4-H Club, Blue ribbon and Intermediate Division Reserve Champion. Senior Division: Jacqueline Billard, Honesdale and Bethany 4-H Club, Blue ribbon and Senior Division Champion. The judging criteria for the 4-H Dressed Capon Round-up included: All dressed 4-H capons have to weigh at least 7 pounds (dressed weight), the dressed capon carcasses have to be cold to the touch, the dressed capon had to have a long, wide and meaty breast, have well-muscled meaty and defined legs and thighs, be free of pin feathers, skin tears, bruises and not showing any overscald damage to the skin and cuticle. In addition, the dressed capons were exhibited as a pair of dressed capons and were packaged in Cryovac Poultry Bags to enhance customer eye appeal and customer preference and acceptance to purchase the dressed capon for family-use dinners at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. The 4-H Capon Production Project is just one of many 4-H Poultry Science Projects available thru the Wayne County 4-H Program.
