  • One man was killed and four others suffered major injuries, Saturday afternoon in a two-car wreck on Owego Turnpike, in the area of the Rowe farm.
State Police Honesdale report that Manuel A. Mirailh, age 57, of Lake Ariel, was killed.
Mirailh was in the American Legion for 22 years and was active at local, state and national levels. He currently had the role of Judge Advocate for the 5th District and was a member of Staff Sgt. Paul A. Sweeney Post 807 in Hamlin, said District 15 Commander Timothy A. French.
Mirailh also was District 15 Commander, twice.
According to police, Mirailh was traveling west on the Owego Turnpike at 4:41 p.m., when he lost control on a left-hand curve for unknown reasons. The 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue which he was driving went into the eastbound land and struck an oncoming 2014 Mazda CX-5, head-on.
Upon impact, the Mazda overturned on its side, trapping all four occupants. They were extricated by fire and rescue personnel from White Mills Fire Department and Hawley Fire Department.
The driver of the Mazda, Antonio A. Silva, 46, of Cliffwood Beach, NJ and his three passengers, Michael J. Smith, 54, of Milford; Kimberly Silva, 46, of Cliffwood Beach and Susan A. Smith, 49, of Milford, received major injuries, said police.
Three of the occupants from the Mazda were transported by Geisinger Community Medical Center by aeromedical helocopters. The fourth was transported there by ground ambulance.
Hawley Ambulance, White Mills Fire Department Ambulance, Wayne Ambulance and Pike County ALS were at the scene.
Troop R Collision & Accident Reconstruction Unit and Foresnic Services Unite also assisted at the scene. Cpl. Derek Felsman asked that anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact him at the Honesdale barracks at 570-253-7126.
American Legion District 15 Commander French commented of Mirailh's passing, "I knew Manny since I joined the Post 15 years ago. He was always very involved in veteran affairs, and supportive of all veterans, whether in the American Legion or not. He will be sorely missed by the American Legion and all veterans."
His son, Manual Arron Mirailh (Jr.), was elected commander of the Sons of the American Legion, Staff Sgt. Paul A. Sweeney Post 807 in 2011.
An older son, Ryan Ros Mirailh, was killed in an automobile crash in 2008.
