  • Organizers from Wayne, Pike and Susquehanna counties who brought Rachel's Challenge, a school and community-based initiative touting the message Inspiring Others with Kindness, express their gratitude to representatives from the national organization as well as local supporters.
The program, based on the writings and life of the late Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine High School shooting, promotes replacing violence, bullying and negativity with acts of respect and kindness. Rachel's Challenge presenters, traveling from Colorado, Rhode Island and Virginia spoke to an estimated 12,000 students and adults during this initial phase.
"Rachel's Challenge was so well received in every school district and community we reached out to. Without the enthusiasm of students, school officials, local media, county commissioners and businesses as well as the community at large we would never have experienced such success," stated Donna Decker, community health manager of Wayne Memorial Hospital.
School and community activities are ongoing to sustain the momentum of the program's powerful message through avenues such as Friends of Rachel clubs.
