  • - The second meeting of the Wayne-Pike Farm Bureau's Youth Agriculture Alliance will be held tonight at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce in the Community Room.
"Such a success came from the last one," said vice president of the bureau Dave Williams. "We had about 80 people," attend.
This meeting will be the second for the Youth Alliance and will focus on specific issues related to starting out in agriculture.
"Anyone interested in doing anything with agriculture can attend," he said. This includes businesses dealing directly with agriculture as well as farmers.
Since the last meeting, Williams says that many who attended have moved forward with their career in agriculture.
"Some of the people that attended have already moved forward with buying property," he said. "They also learned how to become better business people."
Williams says he feels one of the reasons for the success of the program is the mentor opportunities that are offered.
"The real secret is the mentorship," he said. "We have a real big brother/big sister type thing."
He said another purpose for the meeting is to help broaden the sense of community.
"The purpose is to create new bonds and retain the farming community," he said. "We want to keep open land, which will help lower taxes throughout and create jobs in the area."
The meeting also offers the chance for new farmers to speak to other area businesses, like banks, to learn about all aspects of the business of agriculture.
Overall, Williams says that the alliance is "really beneficial all the way around."
The meeting of the Wayne/Pike Farm Bureau Youth Alliance will begin at 7 p.m. tonight.
