- The children of the Preston School greeted Dave Carr and his special friend, Lucky Duck, with unrivaled enthusiasm on Thursday morning.
Carr, or "Magic Dave" as he is known to children, was on hand to give a presentation to children about being safe.
"I've been doing this for 15 years," he said. "The company has been in business for over 32 years."
Creative Safety Products, formed in 1975, strives to bring child safety lessons to elementary schools. The theme for this presentation was "Be Safe, Stay Safe, Feel Safe."
"We cover topics like stranger danger, internet safety and how to deal with a bully," he said.
The Officer Phil presentation runs around 30 minutes and keeps children engaged and educated on important topics.
Carr uses various techniques, from magic tricks to puppets, to keep children learning and laughing.
"This year's special friend is Lucky Duck," Carr said.
Lucky Duck quacks on to the podium to relate to kids that he does not feel safe.
Carr then teaches his feathered friend that the world is not a scary place to be.
"You can feel safe lots of places," he said. "In your school with your teachers and at home with your parents."
He also stressed to students how to respond to a bully.
"Bullies pick on you, maybe they even call you names or push you," he said. When dealing with a bully, he said it is important to tell an adult.
"Teachers can't help you if they don't know it is happening."
The program also teaches children to have respect for authority figures and how to stay safe in an emergency situation. Other talking points were eating healthy and being sure to get enough exercise.
The Officer Phil program came to the Wayne Highlands School District after receiving a request from the Honesdale Borough Police Department.
"Everyone should keep learning about being safe."
Creative Safety Products also has other safety ambassadors, including Deputy Phil and Firefighter Phil.
