A runaway teenager from Honesdale has been located in New York City.
Maddelyn Hayes, 15, was taken into protective custody Thursday by the New York City Police Department where her family was expected to travel and pick her up.
Damian Acosta, 28, the person she fled with from Honesdale, was arrested by the NYPD on an outstanding warrant for a parole violation in New York State. He remains in the custody of NYPD.
According to Sgt. Ron Kominski, officer in charge of the Honesdale Borough Police Department, police in Honesdale received information the pair were staying at a home on Winter Avenue in Staten Island, N.Y.
Honesdale officers followed up on the tip and contacted officials at the 120th Precinct of the NYPD.
At around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, both Hayes and Acosta were located in the home on Staten Island.
Kominski said a warrant will be issued by the Honesdale Police Department for Acosta. He will be charged with interference with the custody of a child, a third degree felony, and corruption of minors, a first degree misdemeanor.
Hayes was reported missing last Friday. It was reported that Hayes and Acosta had purchased bus tickets and left Honesdale. That happened at around 6 p.m. last Friday.
