Wallenpaupack Area improved its 2013 Lackawanna Football Conference record to 2-0-0 with a wild win over archrival Honesdale Friday night.
The Buckhorns used a potent combination of hard-hitting defense and balanced offense in hanging on for a 28-26 victory at Shrine Bowl XXI.
"It's always an honor to play in this game," Dr. Mark Watson said of the annual contest, which is sponsored by the Wayne/Pike Shrine Club. "Honesdale gave us a real run for our money tonight and we're just lucky to be leaving here with a win."
Senior tailback Ricky Smith led the way on offense and was honored after the game as his team's Most Valuable Player.
Another senior, Kenny Roman, took home the Shriners hardware as Paupack's Outstanding Lineman.
Meanwhile, running back Kyle Carney and tight end Cole McConnell earned Honesdale's individual trophies.
"I'm very proud of these kids," an emotionally drained Coach Jim Ludwig said. "They played with a ton of heart. We came up a couple of points short, but they never quit."
Next up for Paupack is a non-league game with Allentown Dieruff. The Hornets are slated for a road trip to Valley View. Both contests are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick-off next Friday night.
