- Several alumni from the Western Wayne School District have teamed up to help out fellow alumni during a time of need.
Started after Hurricane Sandy, the Western Wayne Alumni Disaster Relief (WWARD) committee was founded by Kelly Kyzer and Kim Smith. The committee is currently made up of 10 alumni and they have already helped 11 families, including six from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
The committee is currently working on a fundraiser that will help an alumnus named Sherry, a graduate of the class of 1994. She is the mother of six and her husband is disabled. Sherry was diagnosed with stage two uterine bladder cancer and will be having surgery soon. Her mother passed away from the same cancer in 2007.
Sherry will be out of work between three and six months and the family is in dire need to help with everyday expenses.
WWARD came up with a unique fundraising idea to help Sherry and her family and it involves virtually locking up alumni.
"Two representatives from each graduating class at Western Wayne are being virtually locked up," said Kim Kyzer. "Friends, family and classmates of those alumni can donate to bail them out."
The minimum bail amount for each "locked up" alumni is $100, but Kyzer said she hopes the amounts raised will go over $100.
"Some classes are competing against each other," she said. "The first class to get both representatives out on bail will be able to claim bragging rights."
She added that WWARD will egg the classes on to get classmates to bail their alumni members out.
"It'll be clean fun," Kyzer explained. "It's friendly competition between the classes."
Along with alumni from each graduating class, other people being virtually locked up aren't necessarily graduates of Western Wayne, but are well known around the school. Mug shots of the "convicts" were taken behind a prop that was made to be the jail bars.

While the fundraiser is a virtual lock up, you can also donate by mail. Donating online will go through Paypal, using the e-mail email@example.com. You can also donate by mailing a check to Kelly Kyzer at 764 Stock Farm Road, Lake Ariel, PA 18436. Checks can be made to WWARD. Kyzer also said on the memo, put what class or person you are donating money to bail out.
"We're trying to have the fundraiser closed within two weeks," Kyzer said. "It may go longer depending on how it's doing."
She said it's a quick timeframe because Sherry's family could use the help as soon as possible.
